2011 Math №8 (718)

The example of this model clearly shows that modern photo printers are increasingly moving away from the computer, acquiring the status of self-sufficient household devices.

Acquaintance with the new device, as usual, we begin by examining the package. In the box, in addition to the printer, there is a cable for connecting to the mains, a CD with drivers and software (Windows and Macintosh), a set of ink cartridges, 10 sheets of 10x15 cm Premium Glossy Photo Paper, a quick installation guide, a user manual and a warranty card.

Consider the design features of the printer. The layout of the device is quite traditional for inkjet models EPSON. The feed tray, equipped with a movable sheet width stop, is located vertically in the rear of the device. A tray for accepting printed sheets is located at the bottom of the front panel. Both trays are equipped with telescopically sliding panels that, when inoperative, can be folded flush with the body panels. This solution allows not only to save working space, but also to prevent dust from entering the case at a time when the printer is not in use.

The top panel of the printer housing opens, providing access to the print carriage for installing and replacing ink cartridges. Since we are talking about cartridges, it is worth mentioning that the Stylus Photo R340 uses a six-color printing system (using cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta, yellow and black inks) with QuickDry ink. The non-replaceable piezoelectric printhead allows you to apply ink droplets with a minimum volume of 3 pl. The value of adaptive resolution is 5760x1440 dpi. As in other models of the Stylus Photo R series, this photo printer uses a system of separate ink cartridges, which allows the most efficient use of ink, regardless of the specific tasks.

On the right side of the case in a special niche, closed by a translucent cover, there are slots for installing CompactFlash I / II, SD / MMC, Memory Stick, SmartMedia and xD-Picture memory cards (connection of mini and microformats of the SD, MMC and Memory Stick families is possible with appropriate adapters). Below is the USB host controller port, designed for direct connection of digital cameras, external drives and the optional Bluetooth adapter. On the back of the printer there is a connector for connecting a network cable and a USB port used to connect to a PC.

Card Slots and USB Host Controller Port

The design of the Stylus Photo R340 control panel is noticeably different from previous models of this family (in particular, the R320 and R300): in the center there is a color LCD display with a screen size of 6 cm diagonally, and the button layout resembles that used in the Stylus Photo RX series MFPs.

On this you can complete the introductory part and go on to study the functionality and features of the printer. Given the specifics of this model, it is logical to first of all pay attention to the features of working in offline mode (without connecting to a PC).

  Offline work

In standalone mode, Stylus Photo R340 allows you to print images from memory cards and external USB drives directly from a digital camera, and with an optional Bluetooth adapter, from mobile devices (cell phones, PDAs, etc.) equipped with this interface. It is worth noting that the printer can print on a wide range of media: on plain paper, envelopes, various types of photo paper, labels, thermal transfer paper on fabric, and even on the decorative surface of special coated CDs.

After turning on the power, it takes some time to load the built-in control system. It is worth noting that the printer interface is completely Russified.

When printing images from memory cards or from external media, the device can operate in one of two modes, which can be switched by pressing the corresponding buttons on the control panel. The “memory card” mode is used for printing on sheets of paper of 10x15 and 13x18 cm formats, as well as A4 (the list of available formats varies depending on the selected paper type). The menu allows you to select the type of paper used and one of three gradations of print quality (normal, high, best). In the "special printing" mode, the Stylus Photo R340 printer allows you to print on the decorative surface of optical discs with a diameter of 120 and 80 mm with a special coating (inkjet printable layer), on stickers and on paper for thermal transfer to fabric.

In the case of printing from memory cards and external USB-drives, it is possible to work with image files of JPEG and TIFF formats, which have a size from 80x80 to 9200x9200 pixels. When an external medium is connected, an automatic search for files of supported formats is performed and a message appears on the screen about the number of images found. If DPOF data is detected, the display will ask you to use this information to automatically select images.

In the print menu, you can select images in random order (one at a time), all the images found on the storage medium, the sequence of images (for example, from 3rd to 8th), as well as groups of images taken on the same day. In the latter case, it is possible to randomly select one or more groups of images sorted by shooting date.

In addition to various methods for selecting images, there are also functions for processing them. In particular, for each of the selected pictures, you can set your own framing settings. Using the controls, the size of the framing frame can be changed from 1 to 3x in increments of 0.25x, rotating it along or across the original image. The aspect ratio of the frame changes depending on the paper size specified in the settings.

In the menu of print options, you can manually adjust the brightness, saturation, sharpness and contrast of the image by choosing one of five gradations for each of these parameters. The tinting function allows you to convert a color image to monochrome (there are two modes - black and white and sepia). In addition, there is a mode of automatic image enhancement PhotoEnchance. Automatic image correction can also be performed based on P.I.M. service data. or ExifPrint stored in the header of the graphic file (if P.I.M. data is found in the graphic file header, the corresponding correction mode is activated automatically). If necessary, the automatic correction mode can be turned off.

To improve the quality of photographs recorded with low resolution, a special function is provided, which allows printing to automatically interpolate the original image and suppress digital noise. This feature can be very useful when printing pictures taken with the built-in camera of a mobile phone.

All editing operations (including cropping, toning, etc.) are non-destructive, that is, their use does not lead to a change in the original file recorded on the memory card. Accordingly, when resetting print settings, information about changes made by the user is lost.

In the “Memory Card” mode, the selected images can be printed with various layout options: one photo with or without borders, one image on half of the sheet, 2, 4 or 8 images on the sheet, index print (20, 30 or 80 thumbnails with serial numbers numbers and dates of shooting), photo on documents (several images of 35x45 mm in size). The list of layout options available for selection varies depending on the current paper type and size settings. If desired, the photo can be supplemented with information about the date and / or time of shooting, as well as information about the settings of the camera (including exposure parameters, sensitivity value, etc.), which are imprinted in the lower right corner of the image. The format for presenting the date and time is configured in the corresponding menu items.

By choosing Print Image Framer (P.I.F.) in the print menu, you can frame the printed image using ready-made templates stored in the printer. In addition, using the P.I.F. software provided with the printer Designer, you can create new templates yourself. In order to use this frame in offline printing mode, you must save the file with your template on the memory card.

As already mentioned, in the "Special Printing" mode, the printer allows you to print on the decorative surface of optical discs. To load a disc into the path of the printing mechanism, use the tray that came with the printer. This tray is installed in a special slot with guides, which opens from the receiving tray. To install 80 mm discs, you must use a centering insert.

On the disk, you can print either a single image in its entirety, or a collage of several frames (4, 8 or 12). The printer menu provides settings for changing the external and internal diameters of the printed area on the surface of the disk, as well as vertical and horizontal displacement (which allows you to accurately center the image).

As with most modern photo printers, the Stylus Photo R340 provides the ability to print directly from digital cameras that support direct printing standards PictBridge and / or EPSON USB DirectPrint. The camera in this case connects to the USB port located on the front of the printer.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that the settings for direct printing are not controlled mainly, but in a special section of the menu. Thus, the values \u200b\u200bof the parameters used for printing from memory cards and directly from a digital device are configured independently of each other. And of course, we should not forget that the settings of the camera in direct printing mode take precedence over the settings of the printer.

To implement the wireless printing function from mobile devices (mobile phones, PDAs, etc.), the printer can be equipped with an optional Bluetooth adapter. This adapter plugs into the USB port used to directly connect digital cameras. Settings for working with Bluetooth devices are configured in the corresponding section of the printer menu.

Working with the Stylus Photo R340 offline left the most favorable impression. The simple menu structure and well thought out arrangement of controls provide the most comfortable work with the printer. In addition, one cannot fail to note the high quality of the built-in display, which has amazing clarity. Using the printer’s service menu, you can obtain information about the ink level in the print cartridges, as well as start the forced cleaning of the print head. The operation of the Stylus Photo R340 feeder is notable for its stability: over the entire period of operation, not a single case of paper jam or simultaneous capture of two sheets has been noted. The only drawback that was discovered during the testing process was the imbalance in image centering observed when printing with margins on 10x15 and 13x18 cm cards.

The printer has a number of functions that are not directly related to printing. In particular, when connecting memory cards and external drives, you can start the slide show on the built-in display. In some cases, a backup function can be very useful, allowing you to transfer data from a memory card to an external USB drive (flash drive, ZIP drive, portable hard drive, external recording CD or DVD drive).

As we expected, the quality of the Stylus Photo R340 prints was high. For printing small-format photo cards, it is a very good option to use glossy coated paper (such as Ultra Glossy Photo Paper or Premium Glossy Photo Paper) - these media can achieve high detail prints combined with very vibrant and vibrant colors.

The print quality on the decorative surface of optical discs was also at a high level. During testing, we used a Verbatim-branded CD-R with improved Photo Quality Print Surface inkjet printing, and very good results were achieved with this type of media. In any case, the quality of images on the surface of the discs, subjectively evaluated, exceeds the results obtained using special stickers.

Printer performance largely depends on the quality level selected in the settings, the type of media used, and in the case of borderless printing, and on the size of the tolerance set (with a minimum value of this parameter, the printer pauses between passes of the print head). It is worth noting that in most cases the difference between images printed in normal and high quality modes is almost imperceptible. You can see the differences only by carefully comparing small fragments of prints. At the same time, the output time of the same image printed with normal and high quality is almost two times different.

  PC Printing

Although the Stylus Photo R340 is primarily intended for use as a standalone printing device, it also has the ability to connect to a PC. A high-speed USB 2.0 interface is used to communicate with a PC.

The supplied CD-ROM contains drivers for Windows and Mac OS, as well as the following programs:

  • Easy Photo Print - for editing and printing photos;
  • Print CD - for creating, editing and printing images on the surface of disks;
  • Creativity Suite - for managing scanning, editing and printing of images;
  • Web-To-Page - for convenient printing of web page content;
  • PRINT Image Framer Tool - for framing photographs (with a set of ready-made templates);
  • P.I.F. Designer - for creating and editing frame templates.

In addition, the disc contains a full version of the user manual in electronic form.

The procedure for installing the driver and software did not cause any difficulties. If there is a connection with the printer, the ink level in each of the cartridges is displayed in the print settings window, which allows you to know in advance about the need to purchase supplies.

Easy Photo Print turned out to be a very convenient tool for quick photo printing. The interface of the program is simple and at the same time as clear as possible, which greatly facilitates its development by novice users. All operations for preparing images for printing are carried out in three stages. At the same time, Easy Photo Print has built-in tools for editing images (scaling, cropping, rotation, etc.), as well as for automatic and manual correction.

In the program Print CD, you can create collages for the design of discs using graphic files, text, lines and various geometric shapes. In addition, the menu has tools for adjusting the outer and inner diameters of the printed area and precise centering of the image.

  Conclusion

So, among the main advantages of the Stylus Photo R340 model, it is worth noting a convenient control panel with an excellent color display, a set of really useful built-in functions for cropping and image processing, a good level of productivity and high print quality. By the way, this is confirmed by the prestigious iF Product Design Award 2006, which this printer was awarded in the "Best Design" nomination. Separately, I would like to draw attention to the possibility of printing offline not only on sheets of plain paper and photo paper, but also on the surface of discs and on special media - not all models currently have such functions. The software included in the package is characterized by convenience, functionality and maximum ease of use.

Of the serious drawbacks, it should be noted that the image is not centered properly when printing with margins on cards of the 10x15 and 13x18 cm format. In addition, for a more comfortable work with the printer in stand-alone mode, it would be better to install the display on a turntable.

The Stylus Photo R340 printer is almost an ideal solution for users who in most cases prefer to do without a computer and print photos of various formats directly from memory cards (or other portable media) and digital cameras. Of course, this printer also works fine as a peripheral device, but if you do not plan to use the functions of offline printing, it is hardly worth overpaying for them - in this case it makes sense to pay attention to the 200 series (in particular, Stylus Photo R220) .

The editors thank the Moscow office of EPSON Europe B.V. for the provided Stylus Photo R340 printer and a set of consumables. You can find detailed information about EPSON products at http://www.epson.ru/

Part 2

Work Instructions

1. The work consists of two parts. In the first part of 11 tasks, in the second - 4. 180 minutes are allotted for all the work. The time to complete the first part is limited - 60 minutes are allotted to it.

2. When completing the tasks of the first part, only the answers should be indicated.

Wherein:

    if answers are given to the task (four answers, of which

only one is true), then circle the number of the selected answer;

    if the answers to the task are not given, then the answer must be

write in the space provided for this;

    if you want to correlate some objects (for example, graphics,

    denoted by the letters A, B, C, and formulas denoted by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, then write in the table given in the answer under each letter the corresponding number.

3. If you made a mistake when choosing an answer, cross out the marked number and circle the desired one:

1) 26 2) 20 3) 15 4) 10

If you record an incorrect answer, cross it out and write down a new one:

Answer: x = – 12 x = 3

4. Perform all necessary calculations, transformations, etc. in a draft. If the task contains a drawing, then you can draw the necessary lines on it, mark points.

5. The tasks of the second part are performed on separate sheets with a record of the course of the decision. The text of the task can not be rewritten, you just need to specify its number.

We wish you success!
