For the convenience of users, the ASUS EZ N RT-N12 router has a special graphical interface (web GUI), with which you can easily and quickly set up a wireless device using a browser connected desktop computer or laptop.

Using Quick Internet Setup (QIS)

In the web GUI RT-N12, the manufacturer integrated the QIS (Quick Internet Setup) function, which helps every owner of the router to set up Internet access for a short period of time. At the same time, in QIS it is possible to automatically determine the type of connection being made, as a result, setting up the router requires a minimum of effort from the user.

After connecting all the necessary devices and launching the browser, the QIS settings page will automatically open in its window. In addition, it is possible to launch QIS directly from the network card page in the web GUI. To do this, simply click the Go button in the QIS field under the state of the Internet.

During operation of the ASUS EZ N RT-N12 router in repeater mode, the device significantly increases coverage, thereby ensuring excellent quality of the transmitted radio signal. In this mode, firewall, IP scaring and NAT services are disabled.

Attention! In the initial configuration, the manufacturer recommends using an Ethernet cable. Since the wired connection in the first stages of configuration will help avoid possible problems of wireless communication.

3. Load the browser and see the QIS start page on the screen. In the window that appears, you will be prompted to select the access point from the list of detected points whose coverage you want to increase. After selecting such a point, click "Connect".

Outwardly, a little more “rude” than other network products of this brand are deliberately chopped forms of the case, but with the indispensable corporate decorative relief of the front cover. The case of white plastic is quite large. However, this is all a matter of taste. But on white surfaces dust is not so noticeable. The device has dimensions of 139 × 85 × 33 mm and weighs slightly more than 200 g. To connect to the electrical network, it is better to select a separate wall outlet, preferably a “flat”, not too deeply recessed. Otherwise, the device will overlap several neighboring connectors at once, or it will just be difficult to install. A big plus is that the electric plug turns up to 90 °.



The power switch is located on the bottom of the device. Another pair of buttons (launching WPS and resetting the settings), as well as three dim light green indicators are on the front panel. One of them indicates the presence of power and the state of the device, and the other two show the state of the wireless connections in each of the ranges - in case of a deterioration of the signal level, they turn yellow first and then red. On the sides of the repeater there are two non-removable antennas that can flip sideways by 90 ° and rotate around its axis by 180 °. Next to them are a gigabit network port and a 3.5 mm audio output. In some positions, antennas may interfere with connecting cables to these connectors. The rest of the case is speckled with air vents. It is better to install the device vertically, otherwise it will noticeably heat up.




However, it is not surprising, since the built-in power supply unit and very decent stuffing was packed in a compact case. The ASUS RP-AC56 is equipped with a MediaTek MT7621ST processor (MIPS1004Kc 880 MHz × 1). Exactly the same is used in many modern routers. True, the memory here is incomparably less: 64 MB of RAM and only 16 MB for the firmware. The repeater is no longer needed. There are two radio modules in the device, both support Wi-Fi 2 × 2: 2 - MediaTek MT7603EN (802.11 b / g / n up to 300 Mbit / s) and MT7612EN (802.11 a / n / c up to 867 Mbit / s). In general, the hardware component is good and modern. For audio output, the Realtek DAC and the Wolfson codec are also installed. Alternative firmware for RP-AC56 was not noticed, and they are not needed, by and large. Although this, of course, does not mean that the stock firmware is perfect.

ASUS RP-AC56 can work in four modes:

  • repeater - reception and transmission in the same range, you can create two TD repeater for 2.4 and 5 GHz;
  • the so-called ExpressWay - the reception of a signal from the parent TD goes in one range, and the transmission further in another;
  • media bridge - the repeater is connected to Wi-Fi, and a wired client is connected to the network port, and the child Wi-Fi networks are not created;
  • dual band access point - the repeater is connected to the main network via an Ethernet port and provides two TDs.

In addition, when using an ASUS router along with the RP-AC56, the Roaming Assistant feature is available, which allows customers to reconnect depending on the signal level to the router or repeater.

In the settings you can also find another potentially useful feature - Wi-Fi Proxy, which can be useful when using a repeater in public hot spots. True, the details of her work are not disclosed either in paper or in online documentation. And in general, she is some kind of incredibly short. However, with the configuration of the device, you can figure out without it. When ASUS RP-AC56 is first turned on, it creates an open Wi-Fi network, after connecting to the user, a simple step-by-step configuration wizard is available to the user in the web interface. The rest of the web interface visually and functionally coincides with that used in ASUS routers. At the same time, ASUS RP-AC56 has more features than some of the routers we tested earlier.

One of the features of all modern ASUS repeaters is a built-in audio interface that allows you to play files from local UPnP / DLNA servers. In ASUS RP-AC56, you can adjust the volume or mute the sound completely. To work with audio, it is proposed to use the ASUS AiPlayer application for Android and iOS, and the audio output volume control is available only in it. Theoretically, other UPnP / DLNA programs can use the repeater, but in fact, the sound output to the repeater can only be earned from a standard iOS player. The AiPlayer app for Android only played audio from the recommended XiiaLive application. Attempts to play the sound directly from your home NAS or using third-party software failed. Although the AiPlayer NAS was visible, you could choose a repeater in the web interface of NAS and other applications. As for the audio quality, then you should not count on the crystal clear sound. Perhaps, it is best to perceive the repeater as an advanced radio.

The distance from the router to the repeater and from the repeater to the client was four meters, that is, the wireless signal overcame up to eight meters, without, however, encountering any obstacles in its path. The result was the following set of routes:

In the same order, the test results are presented in the table above. No surprises, neither good nor bad, the test results are not presented. Approximately such speeds from ASUS RP-AC56 and was to be expected. The only thing worth noting is the good performance in the 5 GHz band in the access point mode, which, however, was accompanied by much more noticeable heating of the device than in the repeater modes.


Conclusion

In general, there are no serious complaints about ASUS RP-AC56: the hardware platform is modern, the data transfer speeds are good, the setup is simple. And the price is not bad for such features, and even a network audio player is an optional bonus to the main functions. However, there remains a feeling of some undifferentiated device. It would not hurt to build the case in a slightly different way, think longer about cooling, tidy up the documentation, lightly add firmware and mobile applications. However, these are not such critical flaws, and the feeling is probably due to the fact that previous models of ASUS repeaters were definitely more elegant and interesting.


The signal of the wireless network is a capricious thing. The same router in one apartment can cover the whole area perfectly, and in the other - only a part. And sin on him is often meaningless, because the device is not guilty. The quality of the signal is influenced by many factors - the number of walls it passes, the material from which the partitions are made, whether they are upholstered, no large aquariums, a large plasma TV hanging on the wall, the presence of “neighbors” in the range, etc. . As a result, users begin to act as they can - who puts more powerful antennas, who makes screens from foil and beer cans. The most effective way to enhance the WiFi signal and expand the coverage area is to install a repeater or, in Russian, a repeater. Asus routers allow you to use yourself in this role.


  Here you can argue - why him when you can buy some cheap follower from China. My answer is - what's the point? A Chinese device costs about 500-700 rubles and has only one function. Moreover, he has antennas, as a rule, 2 or 3 dbi with internal performance. At the same time, as a full-fledged router costs a little bit more expensive - 800-1000 rubles. But he already has an antenna of 5 dBi (RT-N10 D1), or even two (RT-N12 VP or D1).

Procedure:

1. Go to the web interface of the router. To do this, enter the address http://192.168.1.1 in the browser:


Login for access is admin, the default password is admin. Click OK.


Select "Repeater Mode" and press the "Save" button. Asus will reboot.

3. Go back to the settings interface and click on the “Quick Internet Setup” button:


4. In the opened WiFi network table, select the one to which you want to connect the repeater:

Now I start checking gadgets. 2 androyd flew in for 1 second just entered the password. 2 iPhones and 2 androids do not want to connect to any. I enter the password, it hooks up the network and then in all cases the router's page crashes where it says “Access to the requested web page failed”, the reason for the failure is “the network cable is not connected”, then I am invited to go to the settings of the router. And since you purchased a ASUS RT-N13u router or are just about to purchase, the question arises how to configure it so that this router would distribute the existing wi-fi network over long distances. In general, everything is simple.

You need to turn on the router, wait until it is loaded.

Then connect it to the computer through the wire that comes with this router. (it does not matter the stationary computer or laptop).

Then open the browser (opera, firefox, chrome) and write in the address bar 192.168.1.1 the router will ask for the login password, enter "admin" as the login and "admin" as the password.
