Kings Bay (naval base). Kings Bay (Naval Base) US Army base

In 1724 in England, in London, the first volume of the work of a certain Charles Johnson (Charles Johnson) entitled "General history of robberies and murders perpetrated by the most famous people, as well as their manners, their orders, their leaders from the very beginning of piracy and their appearance on the island of Providence until now." The second volume of this work was published there four years later.

Among other entertaining and instructive stories (for Johnson ended every story with a lesson or morality) was the story of Captain Misson's Manuscript about two pirates - Misson and his lieutenant Caraccioli, who founded a pirate colony in Madagascar.

Misson and Caraccioli were, perhaps, one of the first (and certainly the most famous among them) "pirate philosophers", absolutely different from others, about whom we can say that "They raised piracy to the height of the ideal".

The first of them, whose real name is unknown, was from Provence, from the Forben family. Boarded the ship "Victoria" as an assistant pilot, in 1690 he met in Rome a Dominican priest, a "liberal", as they said at the time, that is, a revolutionary and a "libertine" - Caraccioli. The monk's clever words made an impression on the young man, and the smell of the sea, emanating from the young man, had such a strong influence on the holy father that he threw off his cassock and followed Misson aboard the ship.

But the devil was on the alert: their ship was attacked by two Berber pirate ships, which allowed our heroes to show great courage in the boarding battle. Misson liked this male occupation so much that while his ship was being put in order, he hired a ship on board which he took part in the capture of the May Flower, after which he returned to the Victoria to his friend. The course was taken to the Antilles, the friends continued to master the maritime and military craft, and also talked a lot. For Caraccioli, above all an encyclopedist and literary connoisseur, God denied kings, priests, inequality, the fear of death, and especially discipline. He did not exclaim "Anarchy is the mother of order!" only because this expression had not yet appeared at that time. As for Misson, he dreamed of "a life of adventure."

Shortly after a fight with the Berber pirates, the Victoria was attacked by an English ship. The battle turned out to be difficult and bloody: "Victoria" lost a significant part of its crew and all officers, and luck was already leaning towards the British. But, it so happened that the English ship was inscribed "Not destiny" and the successfully launched cannonball landed in its cruise chamber from which the ship flew into the air, leaving not a single soul alive. And only one battered ship remained at sea, having lost all its commanders. Experience shows that such a situation immediately leads to anarchy, and further events refute the naive theses of anarchists about pure freedom.

Caraccioli told the crew that those who want to lead a "free life" with him should remain on the ship, others will be disembarked. All stayed. Misson, as the most knowledgeable of naval affairs, became the captain of the ship, and the monk became its lieutenant.

And here begins a story very similar to the story of the future French Revolution: in the name of humane ideas, people are forced to use force, and this force knows no boundaries.

On the ship, laws for the crew were established, very similar to those of the ships. All that remained was to choose a flag. One simple sailor, Basque by nationality, who knew well that "free life" at sea, denying obedience to the laws, is impossible without robbery, suggested using a black flag with a skull and crossbones, which the English pirates had not raised on their masts for some time.

“Awful! - cried the defrocked. - We are not pirates, we are honest people who decided to lead a free life that God and Nature gave us; pirates lead a dissolute life, we must despise their colors and symbols. " He proposed in turn ... a white flag (which was not yet mandatory for French ships) with the image of the "figure of Liberty" and the motto: "A Deo, a Libertate", that is, "for God, for freedom."

In the name of freedom, they attacked. The first captured ship was empty, the anarchists found only barrels of rum on it. They did not rob the ship, did not take their things and chests; they let him go further, making everyone on board swear that they would not tell anyone (what naivety!) for the next six months.

But this was the only "pure" adventure of the "champions of freedom", since during the second meeting they had to fight and the attacking enemy ship sank. The third ship he met was carrying precious fabrics, which were beautifully captured and sold in Cartagena. Etc.

Misson's behavior towards black slaves looked more noble, behavior completely new and surprising for that era. The first time he found such a cargo aboard a hijacked Dutch ship, he opposed the usual practice of reselling slaves:

“It is impossible,” he said to the crew, “so that the sale of people with the appearance of the same as we are considered permissible in the eyes of God's Judgment. Since no person can encroach on the freedom of another person ... We cannot throw off the yoke of hated slavery and guarantee ourselves freedom by imprisoning others in slavery. Without a doubt, these people differ from Europeans in skin color, customs and religious rituals, but they, nevertheless, are the same human creatures of the almighty God and are endowed with reason. Thus, I wish that they would be treated as free people and that they would do various jobs on the ship and be able to soon learn our language. They will be aware of their obligations to us and will, with increasing skill and diligence, defend the freedom to which they owe our justice and humanity. "

Having said so, Misson freed the Negroes; some of them, like some of the Dutch, wanted to stay aboard his ship, which led to the creation of a rather unusual crew, especially if we assume that by that time it consisted mainly of English (at that time inveterate slave traders). Misson managed to rally such different people into one team (it does not surprise me: the equality of races, which was then impossible on land, was a frequent occurrence at sea). It was especially difficult to prevent someone from lynching on board; success in such a difficult endeavor is truly admirable when you think of the complete ignorance and savage simplicity of the sailors of that era.

Two ships - (the captured English thirty-two-gun ship was given under the command of Caraccioli) - rounded the Cape of Tempest and reached Madagascar, and then the Comoros.

Here events played out that once again anticipated the teachings of Rousseau: fraternization with good savages, or rather with savages, since Misson married the sister of the Queen of Anjouana, and Caraccioli - the princess. True, the queen received a “wedding rent” for brides in the form of 30 guns, 30 pistols, gunpowder and bullets, which increased the royal arsenal of the local tribe more than tenfold! Savages are simple and adventurous people. Having received such a clear superiority over other savages, they, without hesitation, attacked their neighbors on the island of Moheli.

This story would have been quite common if Misson had not demonstrated again an amazing nobility: the captives were sent back to their homes. Humanism? Johnson suggests that Misson wanted to assert his power in these places in this way, playing the classic pendulum game between the sovereign rulers of the archipelago.

Misson got tired of this life pretty quickly, especially the fact that here women played slightly more significant roles in the life of the islands than men. Let's just say: an implicit matriarchy. One way or another, he decided to go on an expedition again. But when the ship was ready to sail, the young wives resolutely refused to leave its deck, where their husbands had the imprudence to invite them for a final inspection. The altercations did not lead to anything and the women were participants (in the role of spectators) of the battle against the Portuguese "merchant of sudden death", armed with 60 guns (!) And carrying on board a small cargo of golden sand worth 6 million livres! Caraccioli lost his leg in this battle.

But that didn't count. The friends intended to create a wonderful republic. For this purpose, the wide bay of Diego Soares was chosen, one of the best places in Madagascar. Here they settled with their companions, who were a strange bunch of people, consisting of French, English and Portuguese pirates along with an Italian monk, as well as Malagasy, freed black slaves, residents of the Comoros, Christians (if you can call them that), Muslims, pagans ... One French song contains the following words: "And they were all the kindest Frenchmen"; by analogy, we can say that this was Libertalia, where everyone lived like brothers, rejecting any violence (of course, this did not apply to the ships that they continued to plunder). Misson was neither king nor president of this amazing republic, but elected for three years "His High Excellency, Guardian of the Laws, entrusted with rewarding courageous and virtuous deeds and punishing vices in accordance with the laws to be established" (this is unheard of! they were almost a hundred years ahead of history).

Englishman Tew became admiral of the republic; Caraccioli - the chairman of the state council, which included "the most capable people, regardless of their nationality and skin color", which was supposed to develop laws. The laws? In an anarchic state? Of course: "Without laws, the weakest citizens will always be oppressed, and this can lead to unrest." Bossuet at the court of the Great King of "divine origin" expressed his thoughts in this way.

Still ahead of its time by a hundred years, a tradition was laid: the laws of which there were a large number (which is also characteristic only for the next century) were published, since it was possible to collect all the necessary materials, fonts and press for this and find a person, who knows how to use it all. Pirates have a paper kingdom!

Since pirates constituted the bulk of the inhabitants of Libertalia, their sea expeditions were the main source of the republic's livelihood, and it was quite reasonable to form something like a cordon along the coast in order to get food and other necessary things. Their field of activity was wide: merchant ships, corsair ships stuffed with riches taken from others, even packet boats - once they carried 1600 passengers on board, whom they released, except for young girls aged from twelve to eighteen years, since they needed to think about the further growth of the republic's population (of course, the girls were taken away in the name of freedom); even one squadron of five Portuguese ships, thrown against the pirate nest, was quickly destroyed and captured by them.

Libertalia considered herself the ruler of the world. The "empires" were powerless against her. So they began to think. But they forgot, or did not know one truth: the giving hand has a habit of being cut off. They bribed the aborigines, lured them, and they quite logically realized that since they are given so much, it means that the giver has something to give. If so, why not take it all at once? With the help of the same guns and pistols that they were given. And the "good savages" attacked the colony from all sides, the first principle of which was to grant them equality with other people. They captured her in a pirate, bandit way.

It was a hard blow. Misson was swallowed by the raging sea. Fortunately, he entrusted the English pirate Tew with a manuscript written, no doubt, by himself: it was all speckled with words, and words, like oysters among stones, are always looking for paper in order to gain a foothold on it. Johnson found this illegible composition in the chest of one of his comrades in La Rochelle; and a large number of proven facts show that this story is not made up.

II. Exposure

This story was officially recognized by world historiography until very recently. No one doubted that if some of the details are fictional, then the basis of the story is the truth.

But more recently, new sensational details of the history of the Land of Freedom have appeared. It turns out that scientists have been led by the nose for more than two hundred years! Who do you think? The author of the famous "Robinson Crusoe" Daniel Dafoe! American literary critic John Robert Moore proved that Charles Johnson is just one of the writer's pseudonyms, and Libertalia is nothing more than a figment of his fantasy. Dafoe created his own republic "To illustrate their political theories about the right of every person to life, the denial of the death penalty, the equality of all people, the injustice of slavery."

III. Doubt

I was interested in this story and I tried to understand this issue. First, I read Moore himself. His evidence did not raise my doubts, but it did raise doubts about what exactly he proved. And he proved that Daniel Dafoe really had the pseudonym Charles Johnson and that Dafoe was living in England when the two-volume General History of Robberies was published ... Based on this, Moore concludes that this work is the work of Dafoe. However, doubts still remained, since all of Moore's objections were still indirect.

First, "you never know Pedrov in Brazil" as the well-known aunt from the movie asked. In other words, Dafoe's pseudonym is not unique, hundreds, thousands of Charles Johnson lived and now lives on the shores of "foggy Albion". You cannot make such categorical conclusions based on just the coincidence of names and dates.

Further, all mentions of Libertalia invariably came from the same source - all the same Johnson's book. There are no other sources. Suspicious? Yes, without a doubt! And yet, suspicion is not evidence. Was Moore looking badly? Did the leaders of Libertalia have any relations with other states? It turns out that the leaders of the "fictional" country managed to leave the withered pages of Johnson's book and twice get an audience with the Swedish king: the first time in 1713 and again - in 1718. Both times the king was asked to take Libertalia under Swedish jurisdiction.

Charles very cordially received the pirates (it should be recalled that at that time the Great Northern War was raging in Europe and Sweden was clearly losing it), and on June 24, 1718, he issued a letter of protection to the pirates, in which the new head of Libertalia Caspar Morgan was declared viceroy of the Swedish crown. In addition, the chief officials of the colony administration were appointed, as well as the main principles of the management of the newly acquired Swedish colony.

But soon Sweden was defeated in the war, she had neither the strength nor the means to support the Madagascar pirates. The death of King Charles XII finally buried this enterprise. Three years later, in 1721, Sweden made the last attempt to continue the work begun by the late king, but the matter did not advance beyond empty talk.

Nevertheless, all this "mouse fuss" reached the ears of our sovereign Peter the Great... In the same 1721, upon the conclusion of the Nystadt Peace, which ended the Northern War, he was invited to the Russian service to the post of Shautbenakht (Vice Admiral). Taking into account that Sweden remained the main competitor of the growing Russia, the tsar showed great interest in Madagascar.

Wilster confirmed that Karl did indeed conduct secret negotiations with the pirates there. Taking advantage of Sweden's temporary inability to take any active steps in the further colonization of Madagascar, Peter decided to get ahead of the Swedes. In the fall of 1723, preparations began for an expedition to the island. On a long voyage, we equipped two thirty-two-gun frigates of Dutch construction - "Amsterdam Galey" with a captain Danilo Myasny and "De Kron de Livde" with the captain James Lawrenceequipped with "The best people." The preparation took place in the deepest secrecy - a very limited circle of people knew about it (Peter, not trusting Wilster, kept him under the most severe supervision).

The small squadron was ordered to avoid all foreign ports along the route, and a special route was developed (from the North Sea the ships were to leave for the Atlantic not through the English Channel, but to go around Great Britain from the north). The ships were disguised as merchant ships, their belonging to the Russian fleet was carefully hidden; English and Portuguese flags had been saved in advance.

Wilster was charged with the obligation to present the head of the pirates with a special letter, which I present here with a slight abbreviation:

Diploma to the King of Madagascar

By the grace of God, we are Peter the First Emperor and the autocrat of all Russia ... [and so on.]

Our congratulations to the honorable king and ruler of the glorious island of Madagascar. Earlier, we decided to send our Vice-Admiral Wilster with several officers to you for some business, for your sake we ask that they are inclined to admit to themselves, give free stay and in what they name ours they will offer you, give full and perfect faith, and with such an inclined answer they were pleased to let them down to us, which we trust from you and remain your friend.

Establishing contacts with pirates was not the main thing in the expedition being undertaken. In the instructions, Peter specifically stipulated the following point: "... appear there to the Great Mogul and try to persuade him with all sorts of measures, so that he would allow him to trade with Russia, and have an agreement with him, which goods are needed in Russia, and what goods from Russia are needed in his regions ..."... Here we are talking about a dynasty of rulers in India, the Great Mughals, who ruled from 1526 to 1858.

As usual, Peter looked much wider than contemporary European monarchs. He saw Madagascar not as a piece of Russia, but as a military and trade base (so to speak) of the permanent presence of Russians in the Indian Ocean and Russia's penetration to the east by sea and, relying on Madagascar as a support base, to establish trade relations with India.

The expedition did take place. At dawn on December 21, both frigates left Rogerwick. The ships for sailing by the port authorities of Revel and Rogervik were prepared as badly as possible, although they were built quite recently: in 1719. And, of course, the very first storm was the last for the expedition: "Amsterdam Galey" was seriously damaged, almost sank, and the frigates returned in the most deplorable state. Later, Wilster wrote to Peter: "It is hard to believe that the sea man sent them."

Instead, they decided to send other ships - "Prince Eugene" and "Krusser", but in February 1724, Wilster received a letter from Peter, in which "His Imperial Majesty has indicated that he intends to hold your expedition until another prosperous time."

Why did Peter cancel the expedition? An unambiguous answer to this question has not yet been found. There are several hypotheses. Perhaps Peter did not want to lead Russia, which had just ended a bloody war, into a conflict with European monarchies over an alliance with pirates.

However, Peter did not immediately give up. During 1724, he returned to the idea of a campaign several times, and on March 24 of the same year he appointed the Amsterdam Galea and De Crone de Livde fully ready. On December 9, 1724, Peter's last order on the Madagascar expedition was issued, and a little less than two months, on January 28, 1725, the great emperor died. The idea of an alliance with the Madagascar pirates was no longer returned.

IV. Actually

In fact, Libertalia really turned out to be just a figment of the imagination and living pen of Daniel Dafoe. To give the whole story a look of credibility, he introduced into it a completely reliable pirate captain Thomas Tew, but it is precisely this "trick" that now makes it possible to assert that the entire history of Libertalia is a myth. The fact is that Thomas Tew's expeditions to the Indian Ocean are well documented; he recorded his parking in Madagascar in October-December 1693 in his diary Adam Buldridge, who lived in the main pirate hideout on St. Marie Island, and Tew's return from the Indian Ocean to America was recorded in April 1694 by customs, the Governor of Rhode Island and some other sources. In 1694-1695, Captain Tew made a second expedition to the Indian Ocean, where he united with Henry Avery and other pirates and died during the battle with the Moorish ship Fateh Mohammed (I. Mozheiko, who also wrote about Libertalia, mistakenly claims that Tew died somewhere between 1710 and 1713).

There is no documentary evidence that Tew lived in Libertalia or knew Captain Misson. And, although Baldridge recorded in his diary all the pirate captains who came to Sainte-Marie from 1691 to 1697, he does not write anything about Misson.

Even if we assume that Libertalia actually existed, then it should have perished no later than 1693, when Tew was still in the Madagascar region. But, for example, A. Davidson and V. Makrushin - another historiographer of Libertalia - claimed that this republic was founded in 1694. Where does this data come from? And how could Tew be the admiral of the Republic when he was in North America at the same time?

As for the attempts of the Swedes and Peter the Great to contact the pirates of Madagascar, they really took place and were documented. But these projects had nothing to do with Libertalia, they were attempts to establish contacts simply with pirates who were based on the island. The only thing everyone clings to is Peter's appeal to the pirate leaders as to the monarch. But this was only a form of address, after all, you can't write to the Russian Emperor “all the pirates who will get this paper”, right?

Kings Bay (eng. Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay ) is a submarine base assigned to the Atlantic Fleet of the US Navy. The base maintains Ohio-class submarines. The base area is approximately 6,500 hectares. The base is located near the town of St. Marys, Camden County, Georgia.

History

Ancient times

Archaeological excavations have confirmed the presence of pre-Columbian Indian settlements on the territory of the King's Bay base, which are several thousand years old. At the beginning of the 19th century, most of the territory of the base was occupied by large plantations such as Cherry Point, Harmony Hall, New Canaan, Marianne and Kings Bay proper. The plantations cultivated mainly cotton and sugarcane.

US Army base

In 1954, the US Army began to acquire land on the coast of Kings Bay for the construction of a marine terminal for the transshipment of ammunition, ammunition and food from ships and vessels in the event of a military threat. Construction of the terminal itself began in 1955 and ended in 1958. For its time, it was a unique engineering structure. The berthing terminal measures 610 × 30 meters. There are three parallel railway tracks running along it. Warehouses art. weapons and ammunition had the ability to load ammunition from wagons and trucks directly into storage facilities. For this, more than 70 km of railway tracks were laid, and the warehouses themselves are reliably hidden underground and protected by earthen ramparts.

It soon became clear that there was no operational need for the US Army at King's Bay. And it was mothballed, and at the end of 1959 it was leased to the private shipping company Blue Star. Despite the fact that the base was never used for its main purpose, it completed a number of other missions. In 1964, the strongest hurricane Dora hit the coast and residents of the surrounding settlements successfully took refuge in the base facilities from the rampant natural disaster. In addition, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 110th Transport Battalion of the US Army was based on its territory in the number of more than 1,100 people, and more than 70 small and medium ships of the US Navy were based in King's Bay.

US Navy base

For the needs of the fleet, the base began to be actively reconstructed in 1975. At that time, an agreement was signed between the United States and Spain on the withdrawal of submarines with nuclear weapons on board from the forward base of Rota (Mediterranean Sea). The US Navy was to withdraw its nuclear forces from the Company by the end of July 1979. The headquarters of the Navy was tasked with finding a new base for the submarines. Their choice fell on the Kings Bay base. The active transfer of property from the US Army to the US Navy began after the election of Senator Jimmy Carter from Georgia as President of the United States in 1976. On July 1, 1978, the transfer of the base was completed. In addition to the territory of the army base, the naval base occupied several hundred hectares of coastline.

In May 1979, the Kings Bay base was approved as the preferred location for the deployment of the new generation Ohio-class submarines armed with the latest Trident II ballistic missile systems. By this time, the following had been built on the base: a training center for the Trident-II crews, a missile base for storing, servicing and loading new generation ballistic missiles, and a repair base for servicing submarines.

On July 2, 1979, the first ship of the AS33 Squadron Simon Lake, a submarine floating base, moored to the pier. From that moment on, the Kings Bay base is considered an active US Navy base.

On January 15, 1989, the first boat of the Trident II, USS Tennessee, arrived at King's Bay. It was followed by the USS Pennsylvania in the same year. The new USS West Virginia was commissioned in October 1990, followed by USS Kentucky in July 1991; USS Maryland in June 1992; USS Nebraska in July 1993; USS Rhode Island in July 1994; USS Maine in August 1995, and USS Wyoming in July 1996. The commissioning of the USS Louisiana in September 1997 made it possible to concentrate 10 of the latest US Navy nuclear attack submarines at the King's Bay base.

The end of the Cold War, and the reorganization of the naval and air forces of the US strategic triad in the 1990s, had a significant impact on the submarine base at King's Bay. According to the SALT II treaty, the US Navy should reduce the number of its ballistic missiles on submarines from 18 to 14 SSBNs by 2005.

In accordance with the SALT-2 treaty, the command of the US Navy decided to re-equip four old Ohio-class SSBNs with Tomahawk cruise missiles. Such a modernized submarine can carry up to 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles. On board the submarine there are special rooms (amphibious compartment), in which, if necessary, can accommodate the units of "navy seals" or marines, an airlock for covert landing of troops ashore from a submerged position.

For a balanced distribution of submarine-launched ballistic nuclear missiles, on August 4, 2003, SSBN "Pennsylvania", and on August 24 of the same year, SSBN "Kentucky" were relocated to the Bangor naval base, Washington state. SSBNs Louisiana and Maine were transferred to the subordination of the US Pacific Fleet. The Florida and Georgia submarines were upgraded to Tomahawk missiles and remained at the Kings Bay naval base.

Kings Bay Naval Base Office

10th Group (Submarine Group 10) Formed on January 1, 1989, as the main command unit of the King's Bay base. Subordinate directly to the Commander of the Atlantic Fleet Submarine Force of the United States Navy. Carries out coordination, direct operational control of submarines on alert. The 10th group is operatively subordinate to the 16th and 20th submarine squadrons. In addition, the 10th Operations Directorate controls the training of submarine crews, develops and adjusts training programs in accordance with current tasks.

16th Submarine Squadron 16 Provides operational control of Ohio-class submarines converted into cruise missile carriers on the US East Coast. The headquarters is located at the Kings Bay naval base. Plans and coordinates combat duty, organizes logistics and scheduled maintenance of submarines.

20th Submarine Squadron It has the same functions as the 16th Squadron, but is engaged in the maintenance of the Ohio-class SSBNs.

The educational center The Kings Bay naval training center provides training and retraining of Ohio-class submarine crews, recruits and trains personnel for submarines. Performs recruiting functions. The training center does not only work for submarine crews based in King's Bay. Submariners from other naval bases of the US Navy are also trained there.

The training center covers an area of over 48,000 m². It has state-of-the-art simulators that simulate almost any situation in naval combat. The classrooms are equipped with the equipment that is actually in service with submarines. In addition, the training center has training grounds for practicing and strengthening crews' survivability skills. Fire fighting, water ingress control, repair and recovery ground, light diving training center. The Training Center has a basic and extended training program. In addition, there are specialized programs to enhance, reinforce and maintain the specific skills of crew members. The King's Bay Naval Base Training Center is well known outside the United States. It systematically retrains submarine crews of the Royal Navy of Great Britain, the Navy of Columbia and some other countries.

United States Marine Corps Guard Battalion. On June 27, 2008, he was reorganized from a guard company into a battalion. The battalion is commanded by a senior officer. It is under the operational control of SWFLANT (Atlantic Command Strategic Forces). The battalion carries out tasks to ensure the security of the naval base in accordance with the plan approved by the chief of naval operations, to protect the territory of the base, to carry out guard and patrol services. The battalion command coordinates its actions with the commandant's office of the naval base and carries out separate tasks according to the base commandant's plan.

Coast Guard (USCG) One of the first measures to protect the Kings Bay naval base from the sea was the creation of the Coast Guard Ships Group. It included several light ships and coast guard boats. Subsequently, the group was reformed into a coast guard and rescue division, which, in addition to warships, included two rescue vessels and a link of multipurpose helicopters of the HH-65 Dolphin type.

Repair Base It occupies the largest area in the Kings Bay naval base. The Repair Base has been operating since 1985 and provides logistical support for SSBNs based at the Kings Bay naval base. The repair base has the largest indoor dry dock for submarines. Its dimensions are L 210 mx W 30 mx D 20 m. The repair base on its own is capable of performing all types of repair work at an industrial level. Submarine overhaul, medium and inter-voyage repair, modernization and re-equipment.

The Repair Base includes a winding-free demagnetization station (SBR), which, in addition to demagnetizing SSBN hulls, also performs research functions to study various fields of the Earth. Research data is used in the development of advanced systems for detecting and tracking submarines of a potential enemy. The SBR operates both within the water area of the naval base and beyond, including on the high seas. The station, in terms of its equipment, is the only one of its kind on the east coast of the United States and is used not only by the ships of the US Navy, but also by the ships of the Royal Navy of Great Britain.

In addition, the structure of the repair base organizationally includes a torpedo-technical base, which provides unloading, loading, prevention of torpedo ammunition, which is placed on SSBNs for self-defense.

Excerpt from King's Bay (naval base)

- It has been said that there should be order, no one should go from the houses, so as not to take out the blue powder - that's it! Shouted another.
- There was a queue for your son, and you probably took pity on your irony, - the little old man suddenly spoke quickly, attacking Dron, - and shaved my Vanka. Eh, we will die!
- Then we will die!
- I'm not a refusal from the world, - said Dron.
- That is not a refusal, he has grown a belly! ..
Two long men said their own thing. As soon as Rostov, accompanied by Ilyin, Lavrushka and Alpatych, approached the crowd, Karp, putting his fingers behind his sash, slightly smiling, stepped forward. The drone, on the other hand, entered the back rows, and the crowd moved closer together.
- Hey! who is your head here? - Rostov shouted, walking quickly to the crowd.
- Headman then? What do you need? .. - asked Karp. But before he had time to finish, the cap flew off him and his head shook to the side from the strong blow.
- Hats down, traitors! - shouted the full-blooded voice of Rostov. - Where is the headman? He shouted in a frantic voice.
- The headman, the headman calls ... Drone Zakharych, you, - hurriedly obedient voices were heard here and there, and the caps began to be removed from their heads.
`` We can't rebel, we keep the order, '' Karp said, and several voices from behind suddenly spoke up at the same instant:
- As the old men grumbled, there are a lot of you bosses ...
- Talk? .. Riot! .. Robbers! Traitors! - meaninglessly, Rostov yelled in a voice not his own, grabbing Karp by the yurt. - Knit it, knit! He shouted, although there was no one to knit him except Lavrushka and Alpatych.
Lavrushka, however, ran up to Karp and grabbed his arms from behind.
- Will you order our people from under the mountain to click? He shouted.
Alpatych turned to the peasants, calling two by name to knit Karp. The men dutifully left the crowd and began to unbelieve themselves.
- Where is the headman? Shouted Rostov.
The drone, with a frowning and pale face, walked out of the crowd.
- Are you the headman? Knit, Lavrushka! - shouted Rostov, as if this order could not meet obstacles. And indeed, two more men began to knit Drona, who, as if helping them, took off his kushan and served it to them.
- And you all listen to me, - Rostov turned to the peasants: - Now we are marching home, and so that I do not hear your voice.
- Well, we didn't do any offense. We are only, then, out of stupidity. Only nonsense has been done ... I told you that there was disorder, - voices were heard reproaching each other.
- I told you so, - said Alpatych, stepping into his own rights. - Not good guys!
- Our stupidity, Yakov Alpatych, - answered the voices, and the crowd immediately began to disperse and scatter across the village.
The tied two men were taken to the master's yard. Two drunken men followed them.
- Eh, I'll look at you! - said one of them, referring to Karp.
- How can you talk to gentlemen like that? You thought what?
- Fool, - confirmed another, - really, fool!
Two hours later, the carts stood in the courtyard of the Bogucharovsky house. The peasants briskly carried and put the master's things on the carts, and Dron, at the request of Princess Marya, was released from the locker, where he was locked, standing in the yard, was in charge of the peasants.
“Don't put it so badly,” said one of the men, a tall man with a round smiling face, taking the box from the maid’s hands. - She's also worth money. Why are you throwing it or the floor of the rope - and it will rub. I don't like that. And so that everything is fair, according to the law. Just like that, under the matting, but cover it up with a senz, that's important. Lubo!
“Look for books, books,” said another man who was carrying out Prince Andrey's library cabinets. - Don't cling! And it's overweight, guys, the books are healthy!
- Yes, they did, they didn't walk! - With a significant wink, said a tall chubby man, pointing to the thick vocabulary lying on top.

Rostov, not wishing to impose his acquaintance on the princess, did not go to her, but remained in the village, awaiting her departure. After waiting for the departure of Princess Mary's carriages from the house, Rostov sat on horseback and, up to the path occupied by our troops, twelve miles from Bogucharov, he accompanied her on horseback. In Yankov, at the inn, he took leave of her respectfully, for the first time allowing himself to kiss her hand.
“Don’t you be ashamed,” he answered, blushing, to Princess Marya in response to the expression of gratitude for her salvation (as she called his act), “everyone would have done the same. If we only had to fight with the peasants, we would not allow the enemy so far, - he said, ashamed of something and trying to change the conversation. - I'm only happy that I had the opportunity to meet you. Farewell, princess, I wish you happiness and consolation and wish to meet you under happier conditions. If you don't want to make me blush, please don't thank.
But the princess, if she did not thank more with words, thanked him with all the expression of her face beaming with gratitude and tenderness. She couldn't believe him, that she had nothing to thank him for. On the contrary, it was undoubtedly for her that if he were not there, then she probably should have perished both from the rebels and from the French; that in order to save her, he exposed himself to the most obvious and dire dangers; and it was even more certain that he was a man with a high and noble soul, who knew how to understand her position and grief. His kind and honest eyes, with tears coming out on them, while she herself, crying, talked to him about her loss, did not leave her imagination.
When she said goodbye to him and was left alone, Princess Marya suddenly felt tears in her eyes, and this was not the first time she had a strange question: does she love him?
On the way further to Moscow, despite the fact that the princess's position was not happy, Dunyasha, who was riding with her in the carriage, more than once noticed that the princess, leaning out the carriage window, was smiling happily and sadly at something.
“Well, what if I fell in love with him? - thought Princess Marya.
No matter how ashamed she was to admit to herself that she was the first to fall in love with a man who, perhaps, would never love her, she consoled herself with the thought that no one would ever know this and that she would not be guilty, if she would be for the rest of her life, no one talking about loving the one she loved the first and last time.
Sometimes she recalled his views, his participation, his words, and it seemed to her that happiness was not impossible. And then Dunyasha noticed that she, smiling, was looking out the carriage window.
“And he had to come to Bogucharovo, and at this very minute! - thought Princess Marya. - And his sister had to refuse Prince Andrey! “And in all this Princess Marya saw the will of Providence.
The impression made on Rostov by Princess Marya was very pleasant. When he remembered about her, he felt cheerful, and when his comrades, upon learning about the adventure with him in Bogucharov, joked to him that he, having gone for hay, picked up one of the richest brides in Russia, Rostov got angry. He was angry precisely because the idea of marrying a pleasant for him, gentle Princess Marya with a huge fortune more than once crossed his mind against his will. For himself personally, Nikolai could not wish for a wife better than Princess Marya: marrying her would make the countess - his mother - happiness, and would improve the affairs of his father; and even - Nikolai felt this - would have made Princess Marya happy. But Sonya? And the given word? And that made Rostov angry when they joked about Princess Bolkonskaya.

Having taken command over the armies, Kutuzov remembered about Prince Andrei and sent him orders to arrive at the main apartment.
Prince Andrew arrived in Tsarevo Zaymishche on the very day and at the very time of the day when Kutuzov was making the first review of the troops. Prince Andrew stopped in the village at the house of the priest, who had the commander-in-chief's carriage, and sat down on a bench at the gate, waiting for the Most Serene Highness, as everyone now called Kutuzov. On the field outside the village one could hear the sounds of the regimental music, or the roar of a huge number of voices shouting “Hurray!” To the new commander-in-chief. Right there at the gate, about ten paces from Prince Andrew, taking advantage of the prince's absence and the fine weather, stood two orderlies, a courier and a butler. Blackish, overgrown with a mustache and sideburns, a little hussar lieutenant colonel rode up to the gate and, looking at Prince Andrey, asked: is the Most Serene One standing here and will he be soon?
Prince Andrew said that he did not belong to the headquarters of His Serene Highness and was also a visitor. The hussar lieutenant colonel turned to the well-dressed orderly, and the orderly of the commander-in-chief said to him with that special contempt with which the orderlies of the commanders-in-chief speak to the officers:
- What, my lordship? It must be now. You that?
The hussar lieutenant colonel grinned in his mustache at the tone of the orderly, dismounted, gave it to the messenger and went up to Bolkonsky, bowing slightly to him. Bolkonsky stepped aside on the bench. The hussar lieutenant colonel sat down beside him.
- Are you also waiting for the commander-in-chief? - the hussar lieutenant colonel spoke. - Govog "yat, everyone is available, thank God. Otherwise, there is trouble with the sausages! Notag" om Eg "molov settled in the Germans. Tepeg "maybe and g" usskiy govog "it will be possible. And then what" t knows what they were doing. Everyone retreated, everyone retreated. Did you hike? - he asked.
“I had pleasure,” answered Prince Andrey, “not only to participate in the retreat, but also to lose in this retreat everything that was dear, not to mention the estates and home of ... a father who died of grief. I am Smolensk.
- Huh? .. Are you Prince Bolkonsky? Very much "hell to get to know each other: Lieutenant Colonel Denisov, better known as Vaska," said Denisov, shaking hands with Prince Andrey and peering into Bolkonsky's face with especially kind attention. "Yes, I heard," he said with sympathy and after a pause, continued : - This is the Scythian war. This is all hog "osho, but not for those who are blowing their sides. And you - Prince Andg "her Bolkonsky?" He shook his head. "Very g" hell, prince, very g "hell, to meet you," he added again with a sad smile, shaking his hand.
Prince Andrey knew Denisov from Natasha's stories about her first fiancé. This memory both sweetly and painfully transferred him now to those painful sensations of which he had not thought about for a long time, but which were still in his soul. Recently, there are so many other and such serious impressions as the abandonment of Smolensk, his arrival in Lysye Gory, recently it is known about the death of his father - so many sensations were experienced by him that these memories did not come to him for a long time and, when they came, did not affect him with the same strength. And for Denisov, the series of memories that Bolkonsky's name evoked was a distant, poetic past, when, after dinner and Natasha's singing, without knowing how, he proposed to a fifteen-year-old girl. He smiled at the recollections of that time and his love for Natasha, and immediately moved on to what passionately and exclusively now occupied him. This was the campaign plan he came up with while serving in the outposts during the retreat. He presented this plan to Barclay de Tolly and now intended to present it to Kutuzov. The plan was based on the fact that the French line of operations was too stretched and that instead of, or at the same time, acting from the front, blocking the way for the French, it was necessary to act on their messages. He began to explain his plan to Prince Andrew.

Kings Bay is a base for US submarines assigned to King's Bay - a base for US submarines assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. These are mainly submarines armed with ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. The base area is approximately 6,500 hectares. The base is located near the city of Saint Marys, Cadmen County, Georgia.

Base history

US Army base

In 1954, the US Army acquired land on the coast of Kings Bay for the construction of a marine terminal for the transfer of ammunition, ammunition and food from ships and vessels. The construction of the terminal itself took place from 1955 to 1958. For its time, it was a unique engineering structure. The berthing terminal has a size of 610x30 meters. There are three parallel railroad tracks along it, which serve for loading ammunition. It soon became clear that there was no operational need for the US Army at King's Bay, and it was mothballed and leased to a private shipping company in 1959. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 110th Transport Battalion of the US Army was based on the territory in the number of more than 1,100 people, and more than 70 small and medium ships of the US Navy were based in King's Bay.

US Navy base

For the needs of the fleet, the base began to be actively reconstructed in 1975. At that time, an agreement was signed between the United States and Spain on the withdrawal of submarines with nuclear weapons on board from the forward base of Rota (Mediterranean Sea). The US Navy was to withdraw its nuclear forces from the Company by the end of July 1979, and for this the Navy headquarters was tasked with finding a new base for submarines. Their choice fell on the Kings Bay base. On July 1, 1978, the transfer of the base from the US Army to the US Navy was completed.

In May 1979, King's Bay was approved as a preferred deployment site for the next generation Ohio-class submarines, armed with the latest Trident II ballistic missile systems. Also on the base were built: a training center for Trident-II crews, a missile base for storage, maintenance and loading of new generation ballistic missiles, a repair base for servicing new generation submarines.

On July 2, 1979, the first ship of the Simon Lake squadron, the AS33 submarine base, moored to the pier. From that moment on, the Kings Bay base is considered an active US Navy base.

On January 15, 1989, the first Trident II boat, USS Tennessee, arrived at King's Bay. It was followed by the USS Pennsylvania that same year. The new USS West Virginia was commissioned in October 1990, followed by the USS Kentucky in July 1991; USS Maryland in June 1992; USS Nebraska in July 1993; USS Rhode Island in July 1994; USS Maine in August 1995, and USS Wyoming in July 1996. The commissioning of the USS Louisiana in September 1997 made it possible to concentrate 10 of the latest US Navy nuclear attack submarines at King's Bay.

For a balanced distribution of submarine-launched ballistic nuclear missiles, on August 4, 2003 the Pennsylvania SSBN, and on August 24 of the same year, the Kentucky SSBN were relocated to the Bangor Naval Base, Washington. SSBNs Louisiana and Maine were transferred to the subordination of the US Pacific Fleet. The Florida and Georgia submarines were upgraded to Tomahawk missiles and remained at the Kings Bay Naval Base.

Kings Bay Naval Base Office

10th Group (Operations Management) was formed on January 1, 1989, as the primary command unit of King's Bay. Subordinate directly to the Commander of the Atlantic Fleet Submarine Force of the United States Navy. Carries out coordination, direct operational control of submarines on alert.

16th Submarine Squadron provides operational control of submarine forces on the entire US East Coast. The headquarters is located at the Kings Bay naval base. Plans and coordinates the maintenance of Trident SSBNs on alert. Organizes material and technical support and scheduled maintenance of submarines.

20th Submarine Squadron has the same functions as Squadron 16, but only in relation to forward lines and forward bases of combat duty (with the exception of the US East Coast).

The educational center The Kings Bay naval base provides training for submarine crews, recruits and trains personnel for submarines. The training center does not only work for submarine crews based in King's Bay. Submariners from other naval bases of the US Navy are also trained there. The training center covers an area of approximately 48,000 square kilometers. It has state-of-the-art simulators that simulate almost any situation in naval combat. In addition, the training center has training grounds for training and strengthening the skills of crews, such as fire fighting, water inflow control, a repair and restoration training ground, and a light diving training center. The Training Center has a basic and extended training program. In addition, there are specialized programs to enhance, reinforce and maintain the specific skills of crew members. The King's Bay naval training center is well known outside the United States. It systematically trains submarine crews of the Royal Navy of Great Britain, the Navy of Columbia and some other countries.

United States Marine Corps Guard Battalion. On June 27, 2008, he was reorganized from a guard company into a battalion. The battalion is commanded by a senior officer.

Coast Guard (USCG). One of the first measures to protect the Kings Bay naval base from the sea was the creation of the Coast Guard Ships Group. It included several light ships and coast guard boats. Subsequently, the group was reformed into a coast guard and rescue division, which, in addition to warships, included two rescue ships and a link of multipurpose helicopters of the HH-65 Dolphin type.

Repair Base occupies the largest area in the Kings Bay naval base. The Repair Base has been operating since 1985. The repair base has the largest indoor dry dock for submarines. Its dimensions are 210x30x20 m. On its own, it is capable of performing all types of repair work at an industrial level. Submarine overhaul, medium and inter-voyage repair, modernization and re-equipment.

Notes

Excerpt from Kings Bay

- She has to absorb too much into herself, to comprehend the whole infinity ... And you will never return there. You do not need to forget anything "old", Isidora ... I am very sorry.
- So I will never see my daughter again? .. - I asked in a whisper.
- You will see. I will help you. And now, do you want to say goodbye to the Magi, Isidora? This is your only opportunity, don't miss it.
Well, of course, I wanted to see them, the Masters of all this Wise World! My father told me so much about them, and I myself dreamed for so long! Only I could not imagine then how sad our meeting would be for me ...
Sever raised his palms and the rock, shimmering, disappeared. We found ourselves in a very high, round hall, which at the same time seemed to be a forest, a meadow, a fairy-tale castle, or even just "nothing" ... No matter how hard I tried, I could not see its walls, nor what was happening around. The air shimmered and shimmered with thousands of brilliant "drops" similar to human tears ... Overpowering the excitement, I breathed in ... The "rainy" air was surprisingly fresh, clean and light! From him, spreading with life-giving force, the thinnest living threads of "golden" warmth ran all over the body. The feeling was wonderful! ..
- Come in, Isidora, the Fathers are waiting for you, - whispered Sever.
I took a step further - the quivering air "parted" ... Right in front of me were the Magi ...
- I came to say goodbye, prophetic. Peace be with you ... - not knowing how I should greet them, I said quietly.
Never in my life have I felt such a full, all-embracing, Great POWER! .. They did not move, but it seemed that this whole hall was swaying with warm waves of some unprecedented power for me ... It was real LIFE !!! I didn't know what other words could be called it. I was shocked! .. I wanted to embrace it myself! .. Take it into myself ... Or just fall on my knees! .. Feelings overwhelmed me with a stunning avalanche, hot tears were streaming down my cheeks ...
