If you have used the Settings application in Windows 8 and 8.1, then you are familiar with its main problem - you open the application, understand that the necessary functions are not presented and you are safely sent to the Control Panel.

Indeed, the Control Panel remains in Windows 10, and if you are an advanced user, you will use this tool from time to time. However, most regular users will never use the panel's services.

The Settings application has become a more complex and functional solution with a logical arrangement of individual controls.

In early preview builds of Windows 10, it seemed like the Control Panel would continue to dominate system tweaks, but things changed very quickly - now Settings contains everything you need in 9 different sections.

While constantly testing the new OS, the techradar.pro expert last used the Control Panel in March. This indicates a rare need to look there to solve any configuration issue, now all this is conveniently done using the "Parameters" application.

There are a few things left that will require the Control Panel, for example, to reset the network adapter settings - but you must admit that these manipulations do not have to be performed often.

Each category in "Options" contains subcategories with concise names. The application is not as intuitive as the Control Panel, but the user can always find what he needs. There has been a pretty significant breakthrough compared to a similar tool in Windows 8 and 8.1.

English-speaking users will not only be able to call the Settings app using the Cortana voice assistant, but also select a specific subsection. Unlike Windows 8, search usually finds exactly the categories you want, not everything.

Whichever version of Windows is installed on the computer, the user will want to customize it to get the best performance. This question is especially acute for owners of weak hardware, which requires a maximum of free resources for stable operation.

Therefore, tuning Windows 10 for maximum performance is a great priority for them when buying new components, such as a processor or video card.

Disk Defragmenter

When adding a large number of files to the hard drive, information is written not sequentially, but in fragments on different areas of the disk surface. In this case, fragmentation appears, and during a request for data, the computer takes longer to process them, because it needs to piece all the "pieces" together. Defragment your disk to minimize these situations. This is done with standard utilities.

Good to know! In Windows 10, disk defragmentation is performed automatically once a week at a set time. But you can start this process after adding a lot of information to the computer in order to optimize the disk.

Important! In the "Optimize Drives" window you can enable / disable and configure automatic defragmentation.

Optimization of startup

In many programs, when installed on a computer, the function is enabled during system startup. They may not be used by the user, but, working in the background, they take away computer resources, so its work slows down. Apps that you don't use should be disabled or completely removed from your computer if you don't need them.

Alternative options for disabling programs in startup can be seen in the video.

Disable unnecessary services

Just like startup programs, some Windows 10 services load your computer's resources, which can slow things down. Disabling them will increase system performance.

 1. In the Run window enter the command services.msc.Alternative option: Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services or open System configuration (in the Run window, enter msconfig) and go to the Services tab.
 2. RMB> Properties> Startup Type> Disabled.
 3. When using the Computer Configuration utility, uncheck the required services and save the changes.
 4. Restart your computer.

Video

Watch the video to learn more about which Windows 10 services you can disable and how to do it.

Customizing visual effects

In Windows 10, a lot of PC resources are used to create visual interface effects. Disabling some parameters (visual effects) of performance will increase the speed of older computers. But on modern gaming PCs, they will have less effect.

Disable adapting windows and the taskbar to the background color, as well as Windows animations.

Indexing speeds up the search for files that are stored on your computer. But this function constantly scans them, monitors changes, so it uses system resources.

Important! You should turn off indexing only when you are not using search on your computer.

Driver setup

One of the problems with slow performance of Windows 10, encountered by a large number of users, is non-original or outdated drivers. This problem is especially relevant for a video card. Look at the driver vendor and their version in Device Manager.

Clearing the Temp folder

The Temp folder in Windows 10 is used to store temporary and intermediate files created by the system and programs. Therefore, to speed up your computer, clean it:

An alternative way is to use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility.

Power settings

By default, Windows 10 is set to Balanced Power Mode, which slows down the processor speed if the device is idle or does not require maximum hardware. To speed up your work, put your computer into a "High Performance" power mode.

Cleaning from viruses and malware

If, after performing the above steps, the PC still slows down, and you do not understand why this is happening, viruses or malware are most likely the cause. Check Windows 10 with antivirus programs like DrWEB Cureit or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Output

Optimizing the performance of your Windows computer can help speed it up. To do this, you need to disable all visual effects, remove viruses, and change the PC settings: disable indexing and some services, update drivers.

The interface changes from version to version in Windows operating systems. The user has to get used to the new interface, which sometimes leads to difficulties in setting up the system. However, at a fundamental level, all operating systems from Microsoft are not strikingly different. And all settings can be easily found in any version of Windows. Let's look at the example of opening the system properties window in Windows 10.

Hotkeys for calling a window with system properties

Win + Pause / Break - calls system properties in any version Windows from XP to Windows 10. The simplest and fastest way.

Only two keys on the keyboard. In some laptop models, you will have to additionally hold down the key Fn, because the Pause there it is moved to an additional function on the key Break.

Text command to launch basic properties of Windows 10 system

Perhaps someone will find it much more difficult than the previous method. It may seem useless. However, there are situations when it is impossible to press a key combination. For example, when connected to a computer remotely, hotkeys may not be available.

Through the "Run" applet

In this case, you can start viewing basic information about the computer using the command line or. The latter can be opened through the Start menu, or by the Win + R key combination.

Type the command:

control / name microsoft.system

It is not difficult to remember it, and in extreme situations it will work in any version of Windows, except XP. It works in the 10th version of the system, it will probably work in many more subsequent ones. It can be much faster than looking for where the developers removed access to the system properties this time. This command can be further simplified and simply typed

Through the command line

The same command is entered through the Windows 10 command line. It, in turn, can also be invoked through the "execute" applet by typing cmd

Through the start menu

Through you can open system properties in Windows 10 in several ways. I find all of them inconvenient, but they are there and our guide would be incomplete if we missed them.

Computer settings

This option appeared only in Windows 10. Something similar exists in Windows 8, but there the settings are launched from a different location.

So click Start> Settings> System> About System> System Information

Through Windows utilities

In this case, the sequence of clicks will be different.
Start> All Applications> System-Windows> This PC> in the right-click Properties dialog box

My Computer icon in Windows 10

Surely many people remember that in previous versions the icon "My Computer" was located on the desktop. And in the context menu of this icon there was the "Properties" item. So in this method we use the same icon. We can simply drag it to the desktop with Drag-n-Drop and open the computer properties via its context menu.

This icon, of course, differs from the same "My Computer", because in Windows 7 and earlier it was not a shortcut, but a special icon. Now we can only create a shortcut to it, which is why in the context menu you can see two items "Properties". The second is just the properties of the shortcut, so the first is needed.

Through the control panel

System properties can also be opened through the control panel. Which can also be launched in two ways.

Quick access to Control Panel in Windows from the keyboard

My favorite way is with the command through the "Run ..." applet You can also type this command in the console.

This method of opening Control Panel works in Windows 10, however it works for any version of Windows.

Launching the Windows 10 Control Panel from the Start Menu

Click the following items in the menu:

Start> All Programs> System-Windows> Control Panel

Open system properties via Windows 10 Control Panel

In the control panel you need to open "System and Security" then click the main item "System" or the sub-item "View the amount of RAM and processor speed"

Opening Windows 10 System Properties through Control Panel

I think I’m right if I assume that he wants to get a smooth operation, optimal performance and usability from a newly installed operating system. Of course, all these parameters are very individual, and what will be convenient for one user may seem unacceptable to another. However, I would venture to suggest that there are some windows 10 settingsthat will be well received and benefit most computer users who have reinstalled their operating system. It is for such people, and above all on my own experience, that I am writing this article.

So, we recently became the owners of a completely new and, by the way, very promising operating system called " Windows 10". As stated in the official messages of Microsoft corporation, this release of "Windows" will be the last. In the sense that the software giant will no longer release new versions of Windows under any numbers (11, 12 ...) or names (like XP, Vista or Millenium). From now on, Windows 10 is a service. The operating system will constantly receive critical and small cumulative updates, and from time to time (every six months) - major functionality updates, which in fact will reinstall the system again, of course, while preserving all files and programs existing on the user's computer. Where am I leading all this? Besides, there is no point in waiting out Windows 10 and starting to study the next version of the operating system. You still have to master the top ten (unless, of course, you plan to switch to another system). And the sooner we do this, the better and easier it will be for us in the future. Agree, it is better to study everything thoroughly and bring it to mind right after installation, and then enjoy uninterrupted work, than to postpone endlessly.

Personally, I work at the computer quite a lot and from time to time I like to start from scratch. By these words I mean clean install of the OS... So now, before starting the setup, I reinstalled myself and I advise you to install Windows 10 cleanly. I described how to do this step by step in the article “ Clean install Windows 10 ».

1. Install updates

So, we have the system installed. Before us is still an absolutely clean desktop and the same sterile contents of the hard disk. Now what? First of all, I personally try to make sure that all the necessary updates are installed as soon as possible. Among them there will certainly be critical ones - for example, drivers for various equipment. To do this, go to the “ Parameters»Menu« Start"(Image of a gear) and go to the section" Update and security". There we check for updates and wait for their installation.

I advise you to pay attention to the "Advanced Settings" tab in the Update Center. Personally, I immediately put two ticks there: on the items “ Provide updates for other Microsoft products when Windows updates". Here, if necessary, it will be possible to postpone all updates for a certain time. This may be necessary, for example, if you have an emergency at work and the delay in starting the computer due to the installation of updates is critical even for a few minutes. This setting does not affect the installation of security updates.

You can also change the period of device activity in the update center - specify the time interval of the day (up to 18 hours) when the computer is used most actively. During this time, it will not reboot to install updates. I have an interval set from 8 am to 2 am. I always install updates on a laptop manually, and the hospital works with them at night - I have it turned on almost around the clock.

2. Do not touch the driver ...

While updates are being installed, I will express my humble opinion about installing and configuring drivers in Windows 10... I believe (and I have good reasons for this) that the “ten” itself is very good at picking up the firewood necessary for my computer. For the sake of experiment, I tried using popular third-party programs to automatically install drivers. They invariably found me a bunch of new driver versions and even installed them. But it ended badly more than once: either the equipment began to work slower, then it generally lost 90% of its functionality (video card). The possible reason, in my opinion, is trivial: the latest driver can be ideally compatible with 7 or 8, but for the "ten" it is simply not yet sharpened. In general, in the end, I invariably had to roll back to the previous version of the driver.

The last attempt to update the drivers with a third-party program (purely out of curiosity, by the way - to see how it all ends and describe the result on the site) ended with the death of the laptop video chip :-( I cannot prove a direct relationship, but I am convinced that everything is so. I think you will draw the conclusions yourself. Personally, I don't install any more drivers on Windows 10 with my hands and using third-party programs. I trust what the system itself chooses. The most important optimization principle works here: do not over-optimize. Why reinvent the wheel (read: look for a way to install the latest drivers) if the “ten” copes with this task, if not by 5 points, then exactly by 4. Driver setup in Windows 10 implemented perfectly, so the chance that you have to go there is minimal.

3. Install the antivirus

While updates continue to be installed, my first and most important task is to install an antivirus. Yes, I know many people think that such a program is not needed on the top ten - they say there is a built-in Windows Defender. I am not one of them, and I expressed my opinion on this issue in detail in the article “ Do I need to install antivirus on Windows 10 ».

Which antivirus program to choose is a personal matter for everyone. Even the weakest is better than nothing. Personally, I go for the completely free 360 Total Security. At least half a billion Chinese users speak in its favor. Can you imagine how you can develop protection technologies on 500 million computers? Development is monetized solely on advertising in the program itself. Western companies never dreamed of this. I also respect the products of the Kaspersky Lab, but I regret the money for them. The recently released free antivirus Kaspersky has not yet tried it, although it would be worth it (I confess).

Avast, Avira and other paid antiviruses with limited free versions were once used and even praised. Then, over time, he concluded that they missed too much of everything suspicious and finally abandoned them. In general, while I hold on to the Chinese (this is now generally in trend :-). If I choose something else, I will definitely add information about it here.

4. Remove the password for entering Windows

A very important point for me in setting up Windows 10 on a home computer. It is very annoying when, for example, in the morning you press the "Start" button on the system unit, go to the shower and get coffee, come back - and instead of the already running desktop, the login screen is stuck on the monitor. Therefore, I prefer to remove this idiotic password so that the login is automatic. How to do this is discussed in detail in the article " Disable or enable password entry at login in Windows 10 ».

5. Install the minimum required software package

It is very strange, but even the most modern Windows 10 lacks some programs that are simply vital when using a computer. For example, an archiver. It would seem how many of them are even free. Microsoft would have agreed with their manufacturers a long time ago and implemented it into its "operating system". But ... let's think that they don't want to restrict competition in the market in this way. In general, from the necessary programs for all immediately after installing Windows 10, I advise you to install the archiver... Personally, I love open source software and use a completely free product called “ 7-zip ».

Next in the queue for installation I have browsers. I use Google Chrome and Opera, although the built-in Edge is pretty good. You can read about free browsers for Windows 10 here. Then I put free office suite , and free graphics editors for Windows 10 .

6. Set up a keyboard shortcut for switching layouts

I don’t know about you, but I’m used to my tongue switching with the combination “ Ctrl + Shift". The default "Alt + Shift", I'm sure, was invented not without the participation of evil spirits - in order to break more fingers of users :-) How to set up a keyboard shortcut for changing the language in Windows 10 described. And there is also an excellent program from Yandex that automatically changes the layout if necessary. It is called Punto Switcher ... Highly recommend. Even despite the fact that Yandex does not pay me for it ;-)

7. Cleaning and optimization

After all the updates and programs are installed, I perform the initial cleaning of the computer and its optimization. If you immediately thought about special programs used for this, then I want to categorically object and say that Windows 10 itself has excellent built-in tools that allow you to do all this much better and more reliably (if only because all these methods and tools were invented by myself the company that made Windows). Details can be found in the article “ How to make Windows 10 boot and run faster ". Initial cleaning of the computer is necessary first of all to remove the files of the installed updates and to organize the information on the hard disk.

Instead of a total

That's basically it. Setting up a freshly installed Windows 10 this ends with me. It would be possible for an endlessly long time to talk about a heap of all sorts of useless things, baubles and other rubbish - there are many people who like to configure the system more than work on it - however, over the years, I realized that minimalism and the ability to stop configuring "Windows" is the best way to ensure uninterrupted, reliable, efficient and pleasant work in the environment of the Windows operating system - all the more so, as advanced as "ten".

If for some reason you are not satisfied with the performance of Windows 10 even after installing it cleanly, then I advise you to read the material “

I have an operating system Windows 10, I need to configure something. This material will tell you about several ways to open Settings in this operating system in 4 ways.

1. Launching the Settings menu from the Start menu

This method is the fastest to open. Run and on its left side you can find a shortcut, clicking on which will open.

2. Search for settings

There is a search icon on the taskbar, clicking on which and entering text will open the settings menu.

3. Using the "Notification Center"

A distinctive feature of Windows 10 from earlier operating systems of the family is. Its purpose is to show what is happening on the device. It also has an integrated section for quick actions. Open by clicking on the notification area icon.

At the very bottom you can see the quick actions section, where you need to click on the tile, thereby opening the window.

4. Using keyboard shortcuts

It is even likely that the method of using the keyboard shortcut is faster than the first one to open the settings window in Windows 10. If this method is preferable, then you just need to hold down two keys + (Win + W) simultaneously. This action will instantly unlock.

Of course, there are other ways to open the "Settings" window in Windows 10, but the ones given in the guide are the quickest and easiest.

5 ways to open the Settings window in Windows 10

Use the Settings shortcut in the Start menu

The Start menu did not make it to Windows 8 and 8.1, but after massive user discontent, Microsoft brought it back to Windows 10, albeit not quite the way we are used to seeing it. It makes perfect sense that the Start menu provides one of the fastest ways to open the Settings menu in Windows 10.

So, open "Start" and take a look at the bottom left of the menu - there you will see the shortcut of interest to us that allows you to go to "Settings".

Use Search / Cortana

This method is not as fast as the first, but it still deserves to be mentioned. Enter the word "parameters" in the "Search the Internet and Windows" field, and as soon as the system shows the search results, press Enter or click on the corresponding result.

Use Quick Actions

Windows 10 includes a new feature called Notifications, the purpose of which is to notify the user of what's happening on their computer. In addition, this function has a series of buttons for performing quick actions.

Open the notification panel by clicking on the corresponding icon in the system tray.

At the bottom of the panel, click on All Options. This will open the Settings application.

Pin "Options" to the taskbar

If you use the settings menu a lot, just place its shortcut to the taskbar. To do this, open the Start menu, find the Settings shortcut, and right-click on it (or hold until the context menu appears if you have a touch device). From the menu, select "Pin to taskbar."

Use keyboard shortcuts

This is the last and perhaps the fastest way. All you have to do is press the keyboard shortcut + i. This action will instantly open the Options window.

How to open Control Panel using the Windows Settings app

In Windows 8, Microsoft was the first to introduce an alternative to the traditional Control Panel. The new Windows 10 Settings app not only includes most of the settings and options available in the classic control panel, but also has settings and options that are not in the control panel.

As mentioned earlier, many of the classic Control Panel settings have not been moved to the new Settings app. Because of this, from time to time, we have to use the classic control panel even in new builds of Windows 10

It would be great if there was a button in the Parameters to open the classic control panel.

Luckily, there is an easy way to open the classic Control Panel right from the settings app. You can use the search box in Windows Settings to open Control Panel.

Yes, to open Control Panel from the Settings app, all you have to do is type Control Panel and then press Enter.

You can also use the search bar in settings to quickly access other sections of the control panel settings. For example, you can type Windows Update to access Windows Update options and Device Manager to open Device Manager.

Tip: Did you know that you can create a shortcut to a specific section of settings on the Windows 10 desktop? Refer to our guide.

How to open settings on Windows 10

Hello. Back in Windows 8 / 8.1, Microsoft began implementing an alternative settings menu, which should eventually replace the standard control panel. In the beginning, both panels worked in parallel and remained in the eight. But with the arrival of Win10 and the next constant updates, the new settings panel gradually acquires more and more functionality, and the control panel is disabled. And since everyone is used to the location of the standard "Control Panel", not everyone finds new settings. And it is for such people that this article is created.

To begin with, I offer you an option to simplify the entry into the settings by adding them to the context menu of the desktop, for this you can use this instruction.

The first of the standard methods is hidden in the updated Start menu, in the lower left corner there is a gear icon, hovering over which we will see a prompt “Options”.

In the second way, I suggest using the Win + I keyboard shortcut, which will open the options menu.

The third method is available if you open the notification center (it is located in the lower right corner), there is a button "All options", if you have not disabled it in the corresponding menu.

Well, the fourth method is available if you open "Computer", select the "Computer" tab and here click on the "Open Settings" button.

Finally, I'll tell you how to open the old control panel while you still can. To do this, right-click on the "Start" corner and select "Control Panel".

Look like that's it. I hope this article was useful to you, click one of the buttons below to tell your friends about it. Also subscribe to site updates by entering your e-mail in the field on the right or by subscribing to the Vkontakte group and YouTube channel. Thank you for attention
