Type design and typography is a constantly evolving and changing art, and each generation of designers brings something new and progressive to it. Some designers embrace change and freedom to experiment, while others prefer the traditional approach. Still others believe that old and new can coexist in order to enrich and diversify the design as a result. One way or another, there is no single point of view when it comes to typography. However, one thing is clear: the type is no longer required to be "invisible" and remain only a modest means of conveying the meaning of the text. Today, a font can be expressive, funny, challenging, daring, and at its best - an independent art object. The modern digital artist must be open to everything new, use all typographic means of expression and create their own aesthetics based on them.
We hope that new generations of graphic designers will continue to push the boundaries and break the conventions of this art. While some innovations will stand the test of time, others will simply mark passing fashion trends. And all this will become part of the rich history of the printing business. In this difficult task, this book can help them, which has become a reference book for designers around the world. The main novelty of the fifth edition is the integration of the book with the website www.designingwithtype.com/5, where readers can see hundreds of examples of specific design projects and get additional information from the field of typography.

Book Description

This book is mainly about how to make books, but its subject matter is much broader. In the past, a lot of literature about this was published in Russian, starting with standards and technological instructions and ending with works on art history. However, all this remained in the past. With the advent of computers, the publishing process has completely changed, and we have published so few books about it. These are mainly translated editions, which often do not reflect our situation. Moreover, there are no tutorials to help you comprehend the basics of modern typography. So this is just such a unique book. It is written in a living, literate language. It is interestingly mocked up by the author. For its publication, the author has specially developed several new original fonts. It examines typesetting fonts, general principles of composition, computer typesetting and layout, the latest publishing programs, font formats and much more at the modern level. This book is interesting and useful for students, future and current graphic designers.

Typography (typography *)

There are many definitions of typography, apparently due to the blurry boundaries of the phenomenon. It is worth trying to identify the subject that will be discussed in this book.

The most appropriate definition would be “the art of arranging / composing

images from typesetting material ** on the plane of the sheet. ”*** In this book, the word“ typography ”means, first of all,“ working with text and working with type ”.

** Under typesetting materialhere we mean fonts, typesettings and other elements, as well as all the background space around and within them.

*** However, one should not forget about paper space. With the help of typographic means it is possible to destroy the flatness of a sheet or its part, to turn a sheet into an illusory space or volume. It is important to be aware of this and avoid accidents.

Short intro

This book is about typography.

The main problem with typography in Russia is that there is almost no typography. The level of type and typographic culture, unfortunately, is very low, including among graphic designers.

One of the reasons for this is probably a lack of information. The literature on typography in Russian is very

basically, these are either translations of Western editions (sometimes inaccurate or not quite consistent with the work with Cyrillic), or books published several decades ago, the information in which is very outdated from a technical point of view. Both require some preparation from the reader or need to adapt to a time or place.

This book is intended for those who do not yet know very much about type and typography, but who have to work with typography.

writing text, for those who are interested, mainly for design students.

This is a description and an attempt to explain some of the patterns, tips and rules adopted in Russian-language typography.

This is not a scientific study, not a means to get rid of all problems, not an absolute truth.

Here, information is collected in good time - in the hope that the reader will have a desire to turn to more serious, complete and complex sources.

This book is about typography; primarily as about working with type. But at the very beginning of work, before approaching the computer, it is

so ask yourself:

what am I going to do?

why and for whom is it needed?

and how to achieve this goal?

The first part of the book is theoretical and may help a novice typographer to pose these questions and begin to answer them.

Starting to read this creation, you feel that James Felici "caresses" every letter, so that in the end a text of amazing grace and beauty will come out. Despite the fact that this work is very large-scale, everything here is decomposed in detail on the shelves and perfectly systematized.

The book has two large sections, within which it is divided into chapters and subtopics. In the first part, "Principles of Typography," the author introduces the reader to the evolution of various fonts and text editors and reveals the basic concepts of typography. On these pages, you can learn all about the units of typometry, "feel" the design of the font and get acquainted with its characteristics that determine the successful creation of a book using a computer set.

Also, in the first section, the issues of compatibility of various fonts are disclosed, features of various font file formats, the use of fonts in accordance with their options for changes. This section ends with valuable advice on the correct use of fonts in computer typing: how to make text material easy to read and what color scheme of the font to give preference to.

Here, a novice layout designer will get acquainted with such concepts as type size, leading, justification, kerning, tracking, etc. James Felici explains in detail how to transfer and align text correctly, what signs and logos should be used in different situations. Due attention is also paid to the various alphabetic characters and punctuation marks.
