8. Files are often stored in chunks (fragments) on disk or in the file system. The size of the chunks depends on the cluster size of the corresponding file system (usually 4KB on NTFS). In the worst case, this should be stored on 32 different blocks. If there was only one chunk in this file, one block would be sufficient. The problem is writing such a fragmented file: The controller has to find 32 different blocks and in the worst case, delete all of them. Spread: shareware Paragon Total Defrag is a defragmenter offered both autonomously (only in English edition) and as part of Partition Manager and Home Expert solutions. The first of these solutions is positioned as a universal tool for working with partitions and data on hard drives and allows you to perform any standard operations with partitions, as well as a number of other actions, including disk defragmentation. The second solution is a software package for hard disk maintenance, with which you can solve almost any problem that may arise during the operation of a hard disk, and quickly and with only minimal computer experience. Both solutions have Russian-language localizations and are offered to Russian users at more attractive prices (490 rubles and 690 rubles, respectively), so the purchase of Paragon Total Defrag in their composition is more reasonable. Paragon Total Defrag is distinguished by its broad functionality and efficiency of defragmentation, and at the same time, it is relatively easy to use. It supports file systems FAT16 / 32, NTFS, Linux Ext2 / 3 and Linux ReiserFS and, unlike most similar solutions (and in this article, unlike all other utilities), it can perform not only background, but also full low-level defragmentation systems. As a result, the fragmentation level is almost zero, and the files are placed according to the optimization strategy. This process is performed in the exclusive access mode (with computer restart) to the partition and turns out to be quite lengthy - while there can be no question of any possibility of access to the computer for this period. During defragmentation, all files are processed, including large (even more than 128 GB) and system files, as well as the MFT area, and the contents of temporary files can be ignored. It is possible to overwrite the MFT in a more compact way (MFT compression), which also increases the speed of access to files on NTFS partitions. Defragmentation is performed with a minimum amount of free disk space (1%), and with such a minimum free space, not many defragmenters are able to work. But it is impossible to use Paragon Total Defrag for any selective defragmentation (defragmentation of folders and files or free space), since nothing like this is provided in this utility. There are also no automation capabilities, which, however, is quite logical, since it is at least unreasonable to launch low-level defragmentation on the machine. The demo version of the program is operational for 30 days, but it has limited functionality - some operations in it work only in virtual mode. The cost of the commercial version is $ 29.95. By default, the program window has three panels - two basic horizontal and one additional vertical, which is easy to disable through command menu... The horizontal panels display disks and operations with them (in the upper panel there is also access to help), and the vertical panel contains tabs with help information. The technology for working with Paragon Total Defrag is generally simple. First, in the disk map "Disk Map" you should select desired disk, and then start the operation of interest - that is, analysis of the disk or its defragmentation, and then patiently wait for the end of the process. True, there are some nuances here - the program performs a preliminary analysis of the disk immediately after it is selected in the disk map, but for a more detailed analysis, you will have to use the Partition\u003e Defragment\u003e "Analyze Fragmentation" command. If the disk is not bootable, then the program will carry out such an analysis and give the results without rebooting the system, otherwise you cannot do without it. In addition to analyzing the disk, you can also test its surface (Partition\u003e "Test Surface"). As for defragmentation (the "Defragment Partition" button or the command Partition\u003e Defragment\u003e "Defragment Partition ..."), there are two modes of defragmentation - fast (Fast mode) and slow (Safe mode), the selection of which is made through the program settings (Tools\u003e Settings). By default, "Fast mode" is launched for the selected partition, but if in the current operating system (say, a system partition is selected) the program cannot access the partition it requires, it will offer to restart the computer in special mode. Before rebooting, you will need to define the settings for the operation, in the list of which you can refuse to save the contents of the Pagefile.sys and / or Hiberfile.sys files and set the desired data sorting option (sort the files according to their size or the time they were last updated).

In the "Fast mode" access to the computer is not blocked, and the operation is carried out relatively quickly and, if necessary, can be stopped. But when defragmenting in this mode, a power outage, hardware failure, or system failure can result in data loss (this is a problem with all defragmenters). If the "Safe mode" mode is set, such a sad outcome of events is completely excluded, since a copy will be created for each file. True, this will take a lot of time, and there can be no question of any activity on the computer during the defragmentation period, so it is wiser to start the process at night. Interrupting the process and restarting the computer during defragmentation in this mode is completely unacceptable. But everything will be reliable, and the results of defragmentation will be better, since the program will be able to access all files. For comparison, recall that when defragmenting in the background (that is, via the API), some part of the files (that is, those files that the program could not access) always remains fragmented.
