Virtual reality helmet gear vr. Samsung Gear VR: Explore Other Worlds. Virtual reality with Samsung Gear VR

The best virtual reality glasses for Samsung phone users.

When it comes to VR on phones, Samsung Gear VR has always been one of the best platforms out there. But now, paired with a motion controller, you have to convince yourself to buy a Samsung smartphone.

Verdict

For virtual reality newbies, the new Gear VR is one of the best options on the market and one of the most affordable ones. If you own one of the latest Samsung phones or released in the last two years, this headset and controller combo is your best bet.

  • Lighter and more comfortable;
  • Supports 2 year old Samsung phones;
  • Great controller;
  • Larger and more expensive Daydream View;
  • Controller battery is not rechargeable;

The revised Gear VR (2017) features a sleek, slightly improved design with a USB-C connector that is supported by and. However, the wireless controller becomes an important aspect of the upgrade.

This is a small remote that looks like the HTC Vive controller, offering a touchpad on top and a trigger. And until it gets an award for originality, it just works. Placed to the right or left, the controller complements phone control, and motion control promises a new level of interactivity that was sorely lacking in the early Gear VR.

And while the number of games that support motion control is small at the moment, the start is quite good. was a step forward in that direction when it launched last year, but we expect Samsung and Oculus to catch up quickly.

Overall, with a robust and growing collection of VR content and a new controller, the Gear VR headset is a painless recommendation. It's lighter, more convenient and cross-compatible with older Samsung phones. However, if you already have a previous version of the headset, you can purchase the controller separately.

SamsungGearVR: Price and Release Date

The new Samsung Gear VR (2017) goes on sale on April 21st for $ 129 and includes an updated virtual reality headset and a new controller.

For users who already own the Gear VR, Samsung plans to sell the controller separately for $ 39 (about RUB 2,200).

For comparison, Gear VR from 2015 cost $ 99 (about 6,000 rubles), but dropped in price from some retailers by almost half.

* International prices are 20-30% lower than retail prices in Russia.

Design

The appearance of the new virtual glasses Samsung Gear VR relatively early versions is not day and night, however, the headset got rid of a quarter of the weight. Compared to the sleek and smaller Google Daydream View headset, the Gear VR's dimensions are still monstrous, but the extra size is dictated by a set of unique features versus Google's "one size fits all" headset.

First, the optics inside the glasses can be adjusted with a dial (outside the glasses) to properly focus the picture relative to the eyes. Google Headset has fixed focus and it may take some extra effort to get a clear image.

Mount and light shielding have always been good on the Gear VR and the new model is no exception. A welcome update is the headset's breathability. The first iteration of the virtual headset just fogged up after a few minutes of use, fog appeared on the lenses, like on a mirror after a hot shower. However, additional vents under the eyes correct the problem.

Compared to the previous model, the pillows that fit the face around the eyes and nose are noticeably cozier and more comfortable. In the box you will find a controller holder that can be mounted on the head strap, very convenient for storing an accessory.

The buttons and port locations are familiar in the new headset, although they've gotten some tweaks. To align with the layout of the new controller, the new headset's touchpad has a Home button so you can switch from whatever app or game you're using.

Controversial solution, but Samsung offers stick-like touchpad solutions. Of course, if you've used Gear VR before, you'll probably master the change easily. But early VR users may be confused as the new solution doesn't provide the most intuitive control scheme.

Instead of using the original MicroUSB location on the bottom of the Gear VR, which was used to keep the phone charged, the new headset features a USB-C port that does the same thing. Samsung advertises it as a multi-function port, so it is highly likely that we will see additional accessories that extend the functionality of the headset like a controller.

Samsung includes a removable MicroUSB adapter that provides compatibility with the following devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5
  • Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

And most likely refurbished versions of Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

ControllerSamsungGearVR (2017)

The little controller, of course, becomes the highlight of the headset, so let's get it straight. The motion-enabled controller is finished in dark colors like the Gear VR 2017, although it also looks great with the older model.

Powered by two AAA batteries, the small controller has a volume control as well as a circular touchpad, with the Back and Home buttons mimicking the buttons on the side of the headset. In the back there is a built-in trigger, which will be pleasant to use in first-person shooters.

There are several games that support the controller and the overall gameplay is just as expected if you've ever played with a Daydream headset or even a Nintendo Wii. You can aim with your controller in the virtual reality world, shoot or pick objects. Compared to others, Samsung's controller works at the same level.

For most early pre-order users of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, the new headset and controller are available free of charge. However. Even for £ 20, the new controller is a welcome and well-built addition to the Gear VR family.

Software

Samsung has made the controller compatible with the apps and games currently available to users. The trigger and touchpad perform the same simple Confirm command, but the ability to use them otherwise is not yet available.

Considering the Samsung Gear VR debuted for the first time in 2015, it's no surprise that the headset has amassed a sizable library of games and apps.

Samsung Gear VR has made a name for itself by featuring highly popular titles like Eve Gunjack, Minecraft and Lands End. Plus, if you're eager to try something new, you can enjoy it everywhere, as the developer community is generous with new games in the store.

Compared to Google Daydream, Samsung has a significantly larger library of titles, but given the abundance of products, the issue of quality comes up quite often. However, the five-star rating system does a decent job of informing users.

The gyroscope built into the controller cannot solve the problems of the Samsung headset lagging behind sudden head movements, but it will allow your hand to rest instead of constantly holding it next to your temple, pressing the headset buttons.

However, when you launch older head-based games, it seems odd that the motion controller stops working altogether. Software and motion control fragmentation is an issue that Google Daydream View hasn't seen, but it doesn't last long as all new games come with controller support.

Performance

The gaming experience you've come to expect from the new Samsung Gear VR headset relies entirely on the smartphone you place inside. If it's a Samsung Galaxy S8, every game and app will run smoothly thanks to the (Exynos 8895 in Russia) and 4GB of RAM.

As the new headset is compatible with an expanded range of Samsung phones released in the past two years, your performance results will vary. It's safe to say that the older your smartphone's chipset, the more likely you are to experience frame drops and rapid device overheating, forcing you to stop playing until the phone cools down.

Luckily, the company has been assembling 2560 x 1440 pixel panels on its flagships since 2015 (the S8 and S8 Plus are 2960 x 1440), so you can count on one level of pixel density no matter what smartphone you're using.

Pairing your controller with your phone couldn't be easier. Like the magical process of connecting AirPods to an iPhone, with a single tap on the new motion controller, you request a connection to the nearest smartphone.

Verdict

The new Samsung Gear VR is a small evolution with minor tweaks and improvements. And while the headset outshines Google Daydream View in terms of size, it offers notable benefits, along with focus adjustment and wide device compatibility.

The included motion controller makes the Gear VR a worthwhile purchase if this is your first time into VR. While the batch of software supporting the controller is small enough, the potential for VR gamers is huge given that Oculus (Facebook) and Samsung are working together to develop the controller.

The decision to buy a new Gear VR (2017) depends on your phone that you are using or intend to buy. Samsung has decided not to support Google Daydream, while Google is working with the likes of ZTE, Motorola and Huawei.

The Gear VR was first shown in September 2014 at the IFA in Berlin, when these VR glasses were perceived as a typical exhibition product. It's no secret that Samsung loves to show what is heard by people, attracts attention, and creates such products, not counting on immediate sales, this is a kind of experiment, an attempt to stake out a place in the market. So it happened with Gear VR, in 2014 the company representatives even found it difficult to name the cost of the glasses, only then by the release of the first version it became clear that their price was $ 500. Limited sales, few enthusiasts, primarily in the US and major European markets.

By the summer of 2015, an improved version of the Gear VR Innovator Edition appears, which only supports the S6 / S6 EDGE, and is the prototype of what is marketed today under the Gear VR name. There are quite a few differences from the first version, this is the appearance of the blowing of the lenses, which prevents them from fogging up, an improvement in the sensor pad, and better organization of the pressure pad. We can say for sure that, based on the first reviews, Samsung has done work on the errors and the first mass release of Gear VR is free from childhood diseases of the first samples. While enthusiasts were willing to pay more for virtual reality glasses than the average consumer, the “old” price was prohibitive for the mass market. It's worth remembering that Google Cardboard and similar simple virtual reality glasses range from $ 10 to $ 25. And there would be few people willing to pay orders of magnitude more for glasses. Therefore, Gear VR for the mass market costs $ 100, in Russian realities the price is set at 8,000 rubles. Which can be considered an adequate offer, since Fibrum Pro, which is considered an analogue, costs the same in Russia. But these are products from different universes, in Fibrum Pro we see good optics, but a very foolishly made harness, a head holder, it is not so convenient in it. Lack of electronics as such, as well as controls, everything is only in the software on the phone that you insert into these glasses. In my opinion, the choice of software is also quite limited, despite the large number of titles, there is almost nothing really interesting. But in the Oculus application store, the set of applications has already exceeded 150, and many are free, there are interesting walks around the planet, games and programs. The Oculus platform is a top priority for major developers, as this is where content developers and players like Samsung are investing their efforts today.

Gear VR's positioning is straightforward, a toy for young people looking to try something new. The warning in the instructions, and even when starting the glasses, says that they are not intended for use by children under 12 years old, you should not neglect this, the consequences can be serious - from slight dizziness to nausea. All products of this kind are not intended for children, especially since they can get hurt while moving in real space, you do not control your movements and are often carried away by what is happening in the virtual world.

The commonplace is how the body reacts to virtual reality glasses. I've tried Fibrum Pro, Gear VR of various variations, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift. In all cases, immersion in virtual reality is accompanied by a slight loss of connection with the outside world, you have no control over what is happening around you. And if you get carried away, for example, standing on your feet, you can bash your forehead, suddenly losing your balance. Therefore, I prefer to watch content with these glasses, sitting comfortably in a chair in which you can lean back, roll your head or turn around to look around.

The Gear VR mount is such that you can insert either a Galaxy S6 / S6 EDGE or Note 5, EDGE + there. The limitation on the number of models is understandable, here you need a high screen resolution, which is in all the above mentioned devices QHD, which allows you to form a good picture. The principle of operation of all such glasses is simple - the screen is divided into two parts, that is, a picture is displayed for the left and right eyes. And so a volumetric effect is created. The downside is that the smooth, glossy picture that we see in everyday life, when we hold the phone at arm's length, disintegrates into separate points when the screen is only a few centimeters from our eyes. Unfortunately, I cannot show you what it looks like, this is not the world of Minecraft at all, if you had time to imagine that, but also not the sleek picture that we are used to seeing in the last few years. The structure of the picture is visible, which cannot be fixed until specialized helmets appear, in which screens will be built in and equipped with high resolution. All virtual reality glasses that use phones are a compromise, and a very serious one from all points of view. The main element of such devices is optics, and here it can be made of high quality, but screens are also important.

I wear glasses, my vision is minus five, so the fact that Gear VR has lens correction for different vision can be perceived as a big plus. People with vision minus twenty can safely use glasses, but in any case, you need to try, as it will be for you, give yourself at least five minutes to get used to it.

If you turn your head, the glasses will still move a little. Correction gets confused, sharpness goes away, the picture becomes a little blurry. The way out is in a tighter fit of the harness on the head, then this will not happen. Here everyone chooses one thing, comfort or picture quality.

If desired, you can connect a charger to the glasses, they have a microUSB connector, then your smartphone will be charged first, then the built-in battery. It is needed for the fan, sensors that track that you are wearing glasses, and also move your head. In principle, the built-in battery will easily last for 5-6 hours of operation, as well as the phone's battery will last for this time, but I have never been able to test this in practice. The maximum time with glasses for me was a little less than an hour, I watched a Cirque du Soleil film, it was a kind of three-dimensional performance in which you sit in the center of the stage, and the show itself takes place around you. An unusual point of view and a good performance, by the way, it's called Kurios.

The control of the glasses is simple, you can turn your head and the cursor follows your gaze, hold it on the desired point, and it opens. You can exit by pressing the Back button, it is on the right side of the glasses, there is also a touch pad, you can select items with it, double tapping is a selection of the desired item.

The phone has a special application that starts automatically as soon as you insert the phone. Before that, you need to unlock it (surprise, surprise), but most importantly, you need to download all software updates, they come out with a fair frequency, and sometimes it is annoying, you want to plunge into the virtual world, and instead - a few minutes of waiting for updates.

Even a schoolboy can handle the settings, there is nothing difficult here. There is a lot of free stuff in the app store, including all kinds of walks through inaccessible places on earth, beautiful three-dimensional photographs (my favorite section), films and games. Virtual reality glasses are perceived by many as play glasses, but my children, having spent several days with them, quickly got tired, until there are no such toys that would capture and make them immerse themselves in this invented world without a trace. For obvious reasons, it is difficult to show the capture of a picture from glasses, but simply giving a two-dimensional picture is stupid, it does not convey sensations. But I will say this, toys do not capture the imagination yet, although I know several fans of this kind of devices, they think exactly the opposite.

For people with a weak vestibular apparatus, all such glasses are contraindicated, the head will be dizzy. Ten minutes, and you already want to take them off. Therefore, the more movement in the game, the worse you will be. The quieter the scenes, the longer you can sit with these glasses.

For those who want to watch a video on how glasses are arranged, I suggest a summer video about Gear VR Innovator, get a complete picture, there are no differences.

There is already a lot of content for such glasses, every day it appears more and more. In Moscow shopping centers, cunning people have put points where for 200 rubles they give you 10 minutes to use virtual reality glasses. It's not worth it, but you can get an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat it is. Even the first generation Gear VR is slipping somewhere, although usually these are alternative solutions.

Would I buy Gear VR or other glasses? Probably not. These are still experiments, which are at an early stage. As a gift, such virtual reality glasses are ideal, this is something that you can never buy yourself, but as a gift it is so nice to receive it. The price of Gear VR at 8,000 rubles is rather big, but it is quite in the market, and for this money you buy the most advanced device at the moment. The same Oculus will cost a little more, but it will also become more functional, in any case, rumors say that. The rumors, however, say that Samsung may become the manufacturer of these glasses. But to buy or not, you decide. You may consider other scenarios for these glasses, find out how to use them. And if you already know, then share in the comments, suddenly there is something like that that we don't know about.

Virtual reality is in vogue today, and many manufacturers offer their own way to get into it. Samsung believes that the best way to move from our reality to a virtual one is with glasses.

How do they look

What unites them? These are flagship devices with screens, the resolution of which is 2560x1440 pixels. To connect them, the developers have provided convenient clamps. The kit includes interchangeable holders with microUSB and USB Type-C.

How it works

The creators of virtual reality glasses have made sure that the user is comfortable.

One of the most important features of the Samsung Gear VR is that these VR headsets are easy to use. In short, all you need to do is insert your smartphone into the holder and put on your glasses. In fact, everything is somewhat more complicated, but not very much.

When you put the glasses on your head, the proximity sensor is triggered. If your smartphone already has Oculus installed, it will launch automatically. If not, you need to install it. Newbies in virtual reality need to go through a little training and confirm their agreement with the user agreement. Well, then you can play, watch the video. Again, if you are a beginner, you first need to adjust the lenses so that you are comfortable.

You can use the cursor to control many application functions. You move your head - the cursor also moves. When you hold it on any menu item for a while, the item expands. On glasses e st and mechanical controls, and sensory. The "Back" button, with a short press, takes you to the previous item, and with a long press, it sends you to the general menu. The Home button is used to navigate to the main Oculus menu. The touch panel allows you to move the cursor, and double tap on it allows you to use application functions and open menu items.

The glasses have both mechanical and touch controls.

The glasses provide a vivid and realistic image. You can view panoramic photos and videos. To do this, you just need to shake your head: just like you do it in reality. The picture quality largely depends on the original content quality. So far, virtual reality is still inferior to the real one in drawing, so you are unlikely to confuse the world in which you live with a game or video tour. But what can be seen with the Samsung Gear VR is already impressive.

How to choose content

If your smartphone already has Oculus installed, it will launch automatically.

By the way, YouTube is not included in the list of supported applications. This means that if you want to watch a panoramic video from YouTube, you need to use a standard browser.

In the "Library" you will find applications that have already been downloaded and installed on your smartphone.

What content is currently available

What can we see in virtual reality? All apps in the store are divided into three categories:

Most games are a variety of shooters. You control the crosshair with your head movements and shoot where your gaze is directed. A large selection of games makes it possible to visit almost everywhere: on mountain peaks, in dungeons, in the depths of space.

Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality headset made in collaboration with Oculus. The equipment gives you access to movies, games, and other content that we can "step in" for a full 360-degree view.

Virtual reality with Samsung Gear VR

The glasses themselves are a fairly simple device. The most important design element is the set of lenses through which we see the phone screen. In our case, it was the Samsung Galaxy S6 screen, as the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for the S6 was tested. Samsung also offers a version designed for Galaxy Note 4 smartphones. Differences are in the phone's mounting system.

Samsung Gear VR device and connection

The lenses are made of plastic. The parts in contact with the skin are made of soft foam and in some places leatherette. The device has a small touchpad, back button, volume and focus controls. Samsung Gear VR glasses do not have their own battery, so the smartphone battery is used. However, you can connect a charger, there is a micro-USB port for this.

The equipment can also be used with headphones, but they are connected to the jack on the smartphone, although there is no special need for this, the sound from the phone's speakers is enough to work.

The smartphone plugs into the USB port on the glasses and fits into special mounts. The Gear VR has a sensor that detects when the glasses are in use. After putting the equipment on our head, the Oculus Gear VR app automatically launches, and we immediately begin to immerse ourselves in virtual reality.

Features of using Samsung Gear VR glasses

Compatibility with diopter glasses was checked immediately. Users with visual impairments also have the opportunity to use this device. Unfortunately, there is not much room inside the Samsung Gear VR, which makes it very difficult (if possible) to put the device on top of the glasses, so it is preferable to put on the lenses or move the device further towards the tip of the nose, but this kind of viewing can hardly be fully enjoyed.

Virtual reality glasses are very comfortable to use. The foam in contact with the skin is soft and pleasant to the touch. Gear VR has a significant range of adjustment, so the device easily adapts to the head. More importantly, the device completely restricts the penetration of light from the outside, this increases the effect of total immersion in the virtual world.

The Samsung Gear VR is excellent at reading head movements, and during testing, it never happened that the glasses misunderstood the movement. If such problems suddenly appear, you can calibrate the device without removing it from your head. Unfortunately, all screen pixels are visible to the naked eye, which affects the image quality. Even the QHD resolution (1440 × 2560 pixels) of the Samsung Galaxy S6 cannot help here.

Samsung has provided a very interesting option - a built-in pause menu. If it takes time to return to the real world, but it is inconvenient to take off glasses, then there is an opportunity to get an image from the main camera of the smartphone on the screen. As a result, everything that is in front of us is visible.

Samsung hasn't forgotten about notifications. They appear inside the virtual world in the form of small plates suspended in space. These are standard Android notifications that present a preview of a message or an incoming call. This allows you to immediately decide whether to leave the virtual world or let things wait.

Watching Videos with Samsung Gear VR

It should be emphasized at the outset that 360-degree videos are not like 3D videos. 360-degree video is immersion in the image within which the viewer can look around and rotate. Stereoscopic 3D, in turn, creates a space-like experience like watching 3D movies in a movie theater.

The most important news is that the Samsung Gear VR can play both types of video content, as well as combinations of both, such as 3D movies. What's more, the glasses also allow you to watch captured and uploaded videos. You just need to move the files to the appropriate directory in the smartphone's memory.

Samsung Gear VR has two main video apps - Oculus 360 Videos and Oculus Cinema. The first is used for watching movies. Initially, several examples are immediately available to us, among which there are both 2D and 3D videos. Interestingly, although the demos provided are short, they leave an incredible impression. The application also allows you to watch downloaded films, the database of which on the Internet is already quite extensive.

The second application, Oculus Cinema, is for viewing flat films. The application simulates a virtual cinema, the picture occupies almost the entire field of view. By turning your head, you can even see the scenery of the cinema. An interesting opportunity is to change them to a little more extravagant. The video can be watched, for example, on the lunar surface or from the point of view of an ant on a smartphone left in the forest. The experience is amazing because the environment responds dynamically to the changes in color and brightness of the film.

In theory, the Oculus Cinema app replaces the cinema. We can go to bed with Samsung Gear VR + headphones on our heads and go to the movies without leaving home. However, such a system will become really interesting only when the screen resolution of smartphones improves significantly.

The main application that Samsung Gear VR can be used with is Oculus Gear VR. It starts automatically as soon as the glasses are put on the head. This is a kind of shop with various materials.

Oculus Gear VR provides access to many kinds of content: games, movie apps, 360-degree concerts, or movie trailers adapted for VR headsets. Some content is paid, but the vast majority is freely available. When we open the app without glasses on our head, it uses the most common design. But once the Gear VR is plugged in, it takes the form of a virtual room with menus floating in the air.

In terms of the quality of the footage available, the movie trailers are the most impressive, especially Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The greatest impression was made by the Cirque du Soleil Curios. The choreography, costumes, atmosphere and quality of the sets are of an extremely high standard. There is so much going on on stage that even after multiple views, you still find something new. Another good example is live recordings, including by Paul McCartney.

Unfortunately, not all materials are made at such a high level as illustrated in the demo. Most of them are very simple and it is striking. After a few minutes, the initial excitement subsides due to the monotony and lack of any meaning. A Bluetooth controller is required for game content.

Additional Samsung Gear VR apps

Unfortunately, there is a big drawback in compatibility with various applications in VR. As mentioned, as soon as the Gear VR is on the head, the Oculus Gear VR will automatically launch and will not turn off in any way. We cannot use other VR applications that Google Play now offers a huge variety. An example is the same Google Cardboard.

The problem with Gear VR is that the Oculus VR application starts automatically when the glasses are on the head. You can, of course, go roundabout ways. The smartphone can be inserted into the mount without the USB connection built into the glasses. It is physically possible, but the phone is placed with a slight incline and, as a rule, does not hold very confidently in the clasps. This solution works well and allows you to view content, but it has its drawbacks. In this position of the smartphone, we have no way to control the “action” on the screen. If, for example, we want to pause a movie, we have to remove our glasses from our head, take out our smartphone and just press the pause button.

This is a bit strange, because the ability to watch "spherical" content from YouTube is almost a generally accepted standard. It's a shame Gear VR doesn't allow that.

Samsung Gear VR and the maze

Samsung VR glasses have also become a challenge for the maze. Some of these content can cause dizziness and nausea in just a few seconds. Dynamic games, in which we look at the world through the eyes of a hero, are worst tolerated. Our eyes see a picture in which we supposedly move quickly, although at this time the body is just on the chair. The brain receives conflicting information and cannot deal with it. We tried to get used to this effect for a long time, but in two weeks it did not succeed.

This unpleasant effect applies exclusively to the labyrinth. In most other materials, we can simply look around from one point. And viewing such materials does not entail any discomfort. Thus, Samsung Gear VR performs much better in movies than in games.

Outcome

This is the big question: is the Samsung Gear VR worth buying? On the one hand, the device gives something new, and virtual reality is something that you just have to see. I think this is the future of the entertainment industry. The first contact with the VR gearbox is overwhelming, and I don't think there is a single person who is not impressed by the device.

On the other hand, the equipment is very limited, and too expensive for the capabilities it provides. The Samsung Gear VR costs about $ 250 and requires a Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone. Moreover, not everything is perfect in this generating equipment.

The Oculus VR app contains quite a few content, but most of it is for a one-time short-term pleasure enough. Thus, after two weeks of fun, you can get to know literally everything that the equipment has to offer. The salvation will, of course, be your own movies that can be watched in VR.

However, do not forget about Google's offer, which is an interesting addition in the face of all specialized solutions, including VR. I mean the universal Google Cardboard glasses, which can be purchased for $ 10. The equipment is much less developed, but it allows watching spherical films.

Overall, if you have a Samsung Galaxy S6 or Note 4 and the $ 250 price tag for a few hours of entertainment doesn't scare you, Samsung Gear VR glasses are a great choice.

pros

  • An amazing experience, this has never happened before.
  • Perfect reading of head movements.
  • A large database of games, videos, and more available on the Oculus Gear VR app.
  • The ability to watch videos that you have shot yourself.
  • Convenient touch panel control.
  • A lot of thoughtful little things, such as the ability to look into the real world using a smartphone camera without taking off your glasses.

Minuses

  • Individual pixels are visible.
  • Inability to exit the main application.
  • The absence of its own headphone jack.
  • Contradictory gaming experience.
  • Only a specific smartphone can be connected.

After a huge wave of popularity that the first ones gathered, the company also created its own device. She decided not to reinvent the wheel, and followed in the footsteps of those already passed. Together with my own version of the virtual reality helmet, which I named. Although many users don't know how to use the Gear VR, it's not difficult at all.

The first versions of the device appeared back in 2014. The gadget weighs about 300 grams. Due to the fact that the Samsung Gear 360 is intended for use with Samsung's flagships, virtual reality glasses use built-in sensors of smartphones, but they also have their own "gadgets", for example, a head rotation and tilt sensor.

It's easy to do. If you are using Gear VR for the first time with virtual reality glasses, then after the first connection, which will occur through the mini-USB input, a notification will be displayed on the smartphone. It will ask you to disconnect it from the Oculus Samsung Gear Vr in order to download a special Oculus program and start setting up your account.

This cannot be done through the interface of the virtual reality helmet itself, but there is good news, this setting and calibration will have to be done only once.

As you know, the Gear VR virtual reality glasses were developed specifically for the Galaxy line of phones, and they are simply not compatible with smartphones from other manufacturers. At least physically, because not all phones can be inserted into glasses.

However, many users who set up and run Samsung Gear VR note that they want to access other virtual reality applications, such as others, but they can't. This is not strange, because they are not included in the product. But this problem is solved as follows:

  1. Disables the Oculus process, which starts automatically when the phone is inserted into the helmet. This can be done using paid applications such as Package Disable Pro.
  2. The program starts up, and Oculus services are turned off (there are three in total).
  3. Gear VR turns into an ordinary Google Cardboard, which uses all the content for virtual reality glasses located in the Play Market.

If the user wants to switch back to Samsung Gear VR mode, nothing will stop him - just resume the previous processes.

How to play games with Samsung glasses?

There isn't much for a Gear VR headset at the moment, but you can still pick something that suits your liking. ... You can even learn new skills in them, albeit in the virtual world.

In order to run any game, you must:

  • Install a special glasses market program called Oculus on your smartphone;
  • Next, you need to connect the headphones to virtual reality glasses and install a smartphone in them;
  • Put on glasses and download / run a 3D game.
