Your ISP provides information on one of the following IPv6 Internet connection types: PPPoE, Dynamic IP (SLAAC / DHCPv6), Static IP, 6to4 tunnel, pass-through (bridged).

1. Log in to the router's web interface. If you don't know how to do this, please refer to the articles below:

2. Go to the section Additional settings (Advanced) > IPv6 .

3. Enable IPv6 and select the type of Internet connection provided by your ISP.

Advice:

If you do not know the type of Internet connection, please contact your ISP or an expert according to the already known information provided by your ISP.

4. Complete the information according to the requirements of the different types of connections. Red spaces must be filled in.

1) Static IP address: fill in the blanks and click Save ( Save).

2) Dynamic IP (SLAAC / DHCPv6): Click Advanced ( Advanced) to enter additional information if your ISP requires. Click the Save button ( Save) and then-update ( Renew).

3) PPPoE: By default, the router uses an IPv4 account to connect to the IPv6 server. Click More Settings ( Advanced) to enter additional information requested by your ISP. Click the Save button ( SaveConnect).

Note:

If your ISP provides two separate accounts for IPv4 and IPv6 connections, clear the Use the same session with IPv4 connection check box and manually enter the username and password for the IPv6 connection.

4) Tunnel 6to4: Internet connection type IPv4 is a prerequisite for this type of connection. Click More Settings ( Advanced) to enter additional information if required by your ISP. Click the Save button ( Save) and click the Connect button ( Connect).

5) Pass-Through (Bridge): click Save ( Save) and go to step 6.

5. Configuring LAN ports. Windows users are advised to select one of the first two types. Enter the address prefix provided by your ISP and click the Save button ( Save).

At present, it is still the most used protocol for accessing the network, IPv4, but the sixth version for data transmission, which appeared along with new versions of the OS, has a number of indisputable advantages. Internet access is now difficult to manage and the number of PCs has grown to the point where legacy tools can no longer meet requirements. The new IPv6 protocol makes it possible to correct this situation, although so far there are some flaws in its work.

Problem

Alerts of the "Network without Internet access" type often appear in Windows 7, 8 due to the constant operation of the network monitoring function in the OS, and when a malfunction is detected, Windows immediately notifies the user. And there is no difference in what kind of connection, for example, via a cord or a wireless connection.

The problem is identified by the appearance of the "!" in the computer desktop tray.

What is IPv6?

This protocol enables the generation and distribution of unique IPs through a DHCP server.

Advantages of IPv6

In modern conditions of a huge number of Internet users, the number of addresses generated by the IPv4 (32-bit) protocol is no longer enough. its capabilities are limited to only 4 billion addressees, although it continues to be used. IPv6 allows the generation of 128-bit identifiers, which significantly exceeds the capabilities of previous versions. Therefore, if a message about the absence of a network appears, most likely, the provider simply does not support the new access system.

How to fix?

You need to find out the activation of the protocol using the following sequential steps:

  1. It is required to simultaneously press "Win" and "R";
  2. In the displayed window, enter "ipconfig" and press "Enter".

If IPv6 does not appear on the display, you need to proceed with the configuration. Entering "Control Panel", further into "Properties of network connections" it is required to activate the protocol by setting the checkbox opposite.

Then click on "Properties". The required settings appear.

If the provider has a DHCPv6 server, IPs are distributed automatically.

Otherwise, you will need to apply manual settings.

How to configure manually

The terminal address must be different from the router. The final number in the router is 1, and in the PC, you must enter any number from 10 to 200.

Please note that if there is an IPv6 connection without Internet access, then the OS will require you to enter the exact addresses of the DNS servers.

Click on the network icon on your computer desktop. Then click on the menu "Network and Sharing Center", to find "View active networks".

Then one of two scenarios is possible:

  1. The network is not recognized and there is no internet access.

This often happens if you have recently installed a new Windows. In this case, the OS often does not receive an IP. If it is entered manually by the computer owner, there is a high probability that the subnet will be entered incorrectly or changed. It is necessary to determine the type of connection, for example, Wi-Fi, and by right-clicking on it in the displayed menu, click on "Status". Next, in the menu that opens, click on "Details", where to find the line "IP-address". With the number 169.254.X.X, we can conclude that Windows cannot acquire an IP address through the DHCP router, i.e. the router is not functioning correctly.

In this situation, you must enter the IP yourself. On the case of the router, its IP, access code and name are usually written. You need to call the network connection menu again and click "Properties", where to find, call the menu "Properties of the Internet Protocol version 4"... Enter DNS servers Yandex or Google, respectively: 77.88.8.8 or 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4. Then click on "Ok".

Doing all of the above should ensure network connectivity. Otherwise, you need to configure the router or there may be problems with the technical equipment of the provider.

  1. Identified network - no Internet access.

It often happens with the use of a Wi-Fi wireless network. In this case, some applications can successfully function on the Internet, for example, Skype or ICE.

The reason is that the OS cannot get DNS addresses or these servers do not work correctly. It is recommended that you enter the DNS addresses yourself. For this purpose, you must first call the network connection menu, click "Properties" and click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) open the menu where to mark "Use the following DNS server addresses"... Further in paragraphs "Priority" and "Alternative DNS" print addresses from “Yandex” or “Google”: 77.88.8.8, or 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

What to do with different versions of Windows and carriers providing network connectivity?

To activate the protocol in Windows XP, you need to use the following commands in sequence: Netsh - Interfac - ipv6 - install. Also, sometimes it becomes necessary to enter the DNS address yourself.

Next, we will indicate several specific options. If there is an activated IPv6 without internet access. For example, in the case of Rostelecom. The main thing here is to enter the correct server addresses. In the DNS line, enter either fours and eights (see the instructions indicated earlier), or apply settings, for example, from Yandex. This works great, which has been proven by repeated practice.

In the case of the Belarusian operator ByFly, there are also many difficulties with the IPv6 protocol. The main reason is the low connection speed. In this case, no settings will help the user.

Health analysis

  • Option 1: enter "ipconfig" in the command line. A protocol with an address will be displayed on the computer display;
  • Option 2: open "Sharing and Networking Center"where you can see the connection status;
  • Option 3: call the menu through the tray icon.

Although today the most common protocol for accessing the World Wide Web and means of transferring data is IPv4 (at least for Windows systems), the new development of the sixth version with the declared support in the latest Windows operating systems looks much more preferable. But! The catch is that quite often the user receives a message that IPv6 is being used without access to the Internet.

What is IPv6?

Consideration of the very issue related to the IPv6 protocol should start from the beginning, that is, with an understanding of what it is in general.

In short and clear, this is a system responsible for generating, assigning and distributing unique static and computer terminals scattered around the world via a DHCP server, and in such a way that no address is ever repeated. In principle, all distribution protocols known today operate on this principle. But the most promising of all is IPv6. Today, few people imagine themselves without access to the Internet, the number of computers or the same mobile devices has increased so much that the existing system is simply not able to generate new addresses.

IPv6 vs IPv4: Benefits

Now let's dig a little into history. Initially, the type was created back in the 70s of the last century and received the abbreviation IPv4. With the then population of the Earth (just over five billion), no one seriously thought about the fact that this system was capable of creating only four billion addresses. It was believed that this would be enough for all generations.

The protocol itself implied the use of a 32-bit address consisting of eight digits. Thus, so many identifiers could be generated. As it turned out, IPv4 turned out to be ineffective (although it is still used). The fact is that the increase in the number of mobile technology in recent years has puzzled developers (each device needs to be assigned a unique, never repeated external and internal identifier).

It was then that the understanding came that the system needed to be replaced. First, the ST / ST2 protocol was created, which was unofficially called IPv5. In practice, it has not received distribution. Unless it was used as an add-on to IPv4, and then only by some companies that tested it.

The global breakthrough was IPv6 technology, which involves the generation of an IP address with a length of 128 bits. If anyone hasn't figured it out yet, there are millions of times more options for creating unique combinations. In general, according to many leading experts, the number of generated addresses is practically unlimited.

Note that the protocol itself, no matter how surprising it sounds, was developed back in the early 90s, and has received distribution and software support only now, and even then not from all providers. Thus, if the user sees a notification that the system has IPv6 installed without access to the Internet, it is very likely that the provider itself does not support such a technology for accessing the Network. In other words, it simply does not have a DHCPv6 server installed, which is responsible for all addresses.

Protocol activation

Now let's get down to practical steps. Let's start setting the problem with the condition of what we have without access to the Internet. Windows 7 and later allow these settings to be enabled, but only if access support is provided at the provider level. Otherwise, all configuration steps will be meaningless.

To get started, there are a few simple steps to follow to make sure the protocol is actually activated. To do this, in the command line (Win + R + cmd) we write ipconfig for a single terminal user or for machines located in the local network and directly connected to this computer. If the IPv6 protocol is not displayed on the screen, proceed to the system setup.

IPv6 without Internet access: what to do?

Firstly, in the properties selected from the standard control panel, you should put a "tick" in the protocol activation line (access can be done much easier if you enter the ncpa.cpl command in the Run menu).

Now you need to use the properties button located at the bottom right. Our required settings will appear in the window that opens.

Common settings

As a rule, if the provider has an active DHCPv6 server running on its own network, there should be no problems.

The settings for obtaining an IP address and DNS server are set automatically. The server itself will assign addresses to machines connected to it.

Manual parameter setting

If for some reason this is not possible, you can try to use manual settings. It should be noted that the address of a specific terminal should not coincide with the address of the router. In a router, one acts as the last digit, but for a computer, you can set, for example, a value of 10, 100 or 101 - as you like. All the same, the address range is in the range from 0 to 256.

It is also worth noting here the fact that in a situation where we have an active connection via IPv6 without access to the Internet, Windows 8 or any other system may require an alternative configuration, the settings of which are most often associated with the introduction of correct DNS server addresses.

IPv6 without Internet access: how to fix the situation on different OS and for different operators

As for the alternative settings for any operating system, there are a few nuances to be aware of. For example, it is desirable to activate the protocol in the "expiration" using the following commands:

Netsh (then Enter) - Interface (then Enter) - ipv6 (then Enter) - install (once again Enter).

But that's not all. In some cases, it may be necessary to manually set the address of the preferred and alternate DNS server. You should immediately pay attention to the fact that the address will consist of sixteen digits and should not even be configured according to the data of the operator of the provider services.

So, for example, the most common and, so to speak, working configuration is considered to be setting up Google services, in which the last four digits in the address assignment can represent either four eights, or two eights and two fours. For the Yandex service, it is even worse. There you will have to prescribe such combinations of letters and numbers that the user, as they say, will spin his head.

Now let's look at some special cases. So, we have an activated IPv6 protocol without access to the Internet. Let's take Rostelecom as an initial example. In this case, the problem, again, comes down only to specifying the correct server addresses (we are not talking about a possible restart of the router, set-top box or any other device).

In the DNS address line, you can write either eights and fours, as mentioned above, or use the settings for Yandex, which imply entering the value 77.88.8.8. Works without problems.

And a few more words about IPv6 (no Internet access). ByFly, for example, (a Belarusian operator) has quite a few communication problems. As follows from user reviews, the connection speed is usually limited to a limit of 600 kbps (if no fiber is installed). You yourself understand that with this quality, there is no need to talk about any settings that could significantly affect the bandwidth. Although at the factory of cables, the speed rarely exceeds 50 Mbps, whatever they say.

However, as an option, you can use the above parameters. Separately, it should be noted that in some cases, when creating a connection, you will have to use unencrypted protocols and passwords, namely PAP and CHAP. Alas, the security of such connections raises legitimate doubts.

Functional check

Finally, we will assume that all settings are correct. Now it remains to check if the protocol actually works.

For this, again, we use the command line with ipconfig. After all the procedures, the screen will show the protocol with the assigned address. Don't like it like that? You can go to the Sharing and Networking Center and see the connection status. As a last resort, you can just click on the connection icon in the system tray (for example, if you use Wi-Fi) and go to the desired menu.

Instead of an afterword

It remains to add that IPv6 without access to the Internet (network) is not the biggest problem of modern users who use IPv4 on their home / office terminals. In fact, by default, the IPv6 system, although it is declared to be supported by the same Windows systems, is nevertheless deactivated so as not to create unnecessary difficulties for users.

For that matter, the issue of activating and configuring this protocol is pertinent only if this technology is supported by an operator providing provider services. Otherwise, you don't even have to try to configure something.

Many ISPs already provide their customers with Internet access via TCP / IPv6. Configuring a network card to work with the protocol isn't difficult. About the protocol

TCP / IPv6 is supported by all Microsoft operating systems from Windows 7 and up. If you use a router to distribute the Internet over your home local network, then there is no point in setting up an IPv6 connection. The router operates on a home network using the TCP / IPv4 protocol. You just need to set the correct settings in the admin panel of the router towards the provider.

In case you do not use a router, but get access to the Internet directly from the provider (the Internet cable is connected directly to the computer), then you can configure IPv6 by following the instructions below.

Enabling TCP / IPv6

By default, this protocol is already configured to automatically connect to the Internet in Windows 7, 8, 10. But often errors appear during operation. The reason for the shutdown may be some program that made changes to the network settings. To check if TCP / IPv6 is enabled, do the following:


Customization

If a provider provides Internet access via IPv6, 99.9% of them use their own DHCPv6 server, which automatically assigns an address to the connection. This means that you do not need to manually register the IPv6 address. You just need to check the box "Obtain IPv6 address automatically".

The only thing is, you can set up alternate DNS.

How do I find my IPv6 address?

It is enough to look at the necessary information in the connected connection:

Important! If the status bar "IPv6 connection: No network access", and that your provider does not support IPv6 connection, then you need. They will help you get uninterrupted access to sites that only use IPv6 connections.

Let's first figure it out - what is it? As you probably already know, to communicate on the network, any device: a computer, laptop, telephone or even a TV uses the IP address system. So far, it is the fourth version of IPv4 that exists in widespread use. It encodes in 4 byte digits. 1 byte can represent a digit from 0 to 255. Roughly speaking, addressing ranges from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. As a result, 4,294,967,296 may receive "ah pi" - just over 4 billion addresses.

But in the 21st century, which is marked by the “century of the Internet” - as the practice says, there are already few free “IPs”. At one time, my ISP quietly issued static IPs. Now this procedure is paid, although only a few years have passed.

IPv6 is generally a new standard that is rarely used so far. In this case, the address is not 32 Bits in size as in IPv4, but 3 times more - 128 Bits. But soon the computer and networking industry will completely switch to the new address format. Now, let's walk you through how to enable IPv6.

Switching on and off

NOTE! If the connection goes to the router, when using your provider of the sixth version, the settings must be made in the router itself.

IPv6 settings are already set by default on most network devices. At the same time, the use of address protocols depends on your provider and which version of the IP it uses. If the wire from the provider goes directly to your computer, then the setup is quite simple for all versions of Windows: 7, 8, 10 and even XP.

  1. Press two keys at the same time « Windows " and "R ".
  1. Write the command as in the picture above and click "OK".


  1. Now a very important point. You need to choose exactly the connection through which the Internet goes. In my case, this is a wired option. Right-click and go to properties.


  1. We select the 6th version of TCP and go to properties. By default, it is necessary to autonomously obtain IP from a DHCP server. If the connection comes from the outside from the provider's wire, then, in theory, he should automatically receive this data. But more recently, some ISPs began to issue the sixth version static address settings.


  1. These data are written in the contract. In this case, we just rewrite all the letters and numbers as on a piece of paper. To set addresses manually, indicate the checkboxes below "Use the following ..." and prescribe. At the very end, double-check the entered data and click "OK".

If you receive an IP address offline, then most likely your provider's DNS servers will also be indicated in the list. But you can specify verified DNS from Google and Yandex:

  • 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844;
  • 2a02: 6b8 :: feed: bad and 2a02: 6b8: 0: 1 :: feed: bad.

How to set up on a router

If the Internet is connected to the router, then register all the data, including the DNS address, in the router settings. To access the web interface of the router, you need to be connected to its network. You can connect via Wi-Fi or cable (insert it into a free LAN port on the transmitter).

  1. Open a browser and register the IP or DNS address of the router. The address is indicated on a label under the housing.


  1. After that, you will be asked to enter your username and password - this information is located there.
  2. Further instructions will differ depending on the firmware and the company that released the device. But the principle itself is the same. I'll show you using TP-Link as an example.
  3. Almost everyone will have this menu item separately. Well, it is called the appropriate - "IPv6". Next, we are interested in exactly the WAN connection.


  1. As you can see, the principle here is the same as for IPv4. There is a dynamic connection - you just set it up and you don't need to enter anything. Static - here you need to manually enter, as in the last chapter: IP, Prefix length, gateway address and DNS server. PPPoEv6 - uses login and password when connecting. We choose our option and simply enter the data from the contract from the provider.
  2. You can check the activation of the mode on the main tab or in "Condition". There you will see your address.

How to find out and view the address?


If the connection goes directly to a computer or laptop, then you can find out through the command line. For this we press "Win + R", we prescribe « cmd ". Next, on the black screen, write the command « ipconfig " and see the result. If you are connecting via a router, then the address should be viewed in the admin panel of the device on the main one.
