The front surface of the Viconan screen has a glass-like plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to smudges. Judging by the display of the lenses, it has a very effective anti-glare filter, which reduces the brightness of the image and is approximately equal to the screen filter of the Google Nexus 7 2013 (later we will compare with it). Visually, the brightness of the display is difficult to assess through the differences in color tone and frame color, but statistics from the graphics editor show that the screen of the new iPad mini is slightly lighter (the average brightness value is 95), lower exus 7 (83), and darker, lower old iPad mini (108).

At higher temperatures, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It performs automatic brightness control based on the brightness sensor (due to the presence of light from the front camera). In this case, the brightness can automatically only move up - with a change in the level of external illumination, we did not notice the corresponding change in the brightness of the screen. However, if you put the tablet into sleep mode and turn it back on, the brightness will return according to modern minds. The minimum and middle levels in the “Auto” mode should be at the top position of the brightness control knob. So, when the dial is set to maximum, automatic adjustment does not work - the brightness is lost to the maximum, regardless of external minds. If the light is located approximately in the middle of the scale, then on a bright light (indicates brightness on a clear day in the surroundings, but without direct solar light - 20,000 lux or a little more bright) There is a maximum - 410 cd/m², in the washrooms of a light-lit office ( approximately 400 lux) - 200 cd/m² (normal), in the dark - 150 cd/m² (high). At extreme cob positions, brightness is either initially maximum, or then changes greatly in the dark. Regardless of the brightness of the backlight modulation, there is virtually no backlight, and there is no shadow on the screen.

The screen can be viewed well without inverting the colors and without a significant change in colors, with great attention, look at a perpendicular angle to the screen. You won’t be able to tell anything by looking at more photographs, since the camera only increases the saturation of colors.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is very good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K and the difference in the spectrum of an absolutely black body (delta E) is less than 10, which is considered a pleasant indicator for a durable device. In this case, the variation in color temperature and delta E is small, which also has a positive effect on the visual impact of color balance. (The darker areas of the gray scale may not be correct, since the balance of colors there is not of great importance, and the loss of dimming of color characteristics at low brightness is great.)


The range of brightness adjustment for the iPad mini Retina screen is wide, and the anti-glare filter is very effective, which allows you to comfortably use the tablet both on a sunny day outside and in the dark i. Automatically adjusts the brightness, and it works more adequately, but only on advancements, so you can set the brightness manually, or the brightness still decreases, putting the tablet into sleep mode and turning on yogo back. Meanwhile, all the Apple tablets have already begun to sing to this particularity. Like the iPhone 5s and iPad Air, the iPad mini Retina runs on Apple's new A7 SoC. In the articles following our instructions, we spoke in detail about this SoC, so we won’t repeat ourselves and move on to the tests. They also showed us the difference between two iPad minis when iOS 7.0.4 is installed on both devices. Moreover, the test results below may differ from the results that were published in statistics about the first iPad mini, since then benchmarks have been updated and a new version of the OS has been released.

Let's talk about browser tests: SunSpider 1.0, Octane Benchmark and Kraken Benchmark. In all cases, we used the Safari browser with iOS 7 on Apple devices, and Google Chrome on Android.

Tsikava results. The new iPad mini is almost (!!!) times faster than the first generation iPad mini, but is a fraction smaller than the iPad Air, although it runs on the same SoC. Since we were already aware of the approximate level of productivity (as we had already tested solutions on the Apple A7 SoC), the situation with the autonomous robot created further intrigue. And now the device will need to display an image at twice the high resolution, and the dimensions of the case have become too large, so the battery cannot be increased much. This led to natural fears that the new iPad mini would have to sacrifice some of the trivialities of the autonomous robot to its predecessor.

However, as the fathers-in-law showed, the battle was marred. The discomfort of an autonomous robot has not only not changed, but has actually increased. Here, however, it is important to note that the first generation iPad mini was tested for this purpose on the new version of the operating system - iOS 7.0.4. It is possible that on the original iOS 6, in which version it was released, the result would be a little better. However, in this case, the work is quite trivial - both iPad minis have.

Minor improvements have been made in the processing of noise: the robot's noise reduction algorithm has not changed at all, but visually the robot has become softer, and other details are more clearly visible in the pictures. However, the camera is already afraid of noise and is tempted to work at minimum values ​​of light sensitivity, compensating for the exposure for the viscosity ratio, so in case of insufficient lightening, the lubricity through the aqueous gee display windows. As you can see, in this case the values ​​are usually 1/40 of a second or higher, since the iPad mini Retina camera has a stabilization system. For example, in all cases there were two images in three samples, and in all cases there were two images in three cases.

In our opinion, the iPad mini Retina's biggest competitors are not tablets of a compact form factor, but tablet phones - Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, etc. In terms of productivity, it is approximately on par with the iPad mini Retina, but it does not compromise on the brightness of the screen (and in terms of pixel density per inch, it is superior), but then it can be used as both a tablet and a smartphone. True, the performance of top-end tablet phones is much higher than that of the iPad mini, but the screen is still smaller. Therefore, the Apple product has its own specific niche, both as tablet phones and as compact format Android tablets.

In general, we definitely recommend the iPad mini with Retina display before purchasing if you haven’t bought an iPad Air yet (or you don’t want to earn one). And the first-generation iPad mini seems to us to be a pleasant option only if the buyer wants to get an Apple tablet cheaper, but otherwise it doesn’t matter. If it is possible, then it is imperative to pay an additional 4,000 rubles and cancel the larger current device.
